Girls Swimming and Diving: Majettes win dual meet against WIlliston

The Minot High girls swimming and diving team won seven of 12 events, defeating Williston, 120-65, in its first dual of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Samantha VonBokern won a pair of individual events in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly, and served as the final leg of both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay, which both claimed the top spot in their respective events. Vonbokern finished the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 59.34 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 59.70. She won the 200 freestyle by 10 seconds over Williston’s Norah Pierce and the 100 butterfly nine seconds over teammate Hailee Valdez.

“We will look to Sam as a stand out again this year,” MHS coach Emily Jensen said. “She has some incredible talent and has worked hard on the off season. With the addition of her sister Sophia and fellow teammate Hailee Valdez, they will be strong leaders for us as we continue the season.”

Other winners for the Majettes in the dual meet were Emily Dunstan in the 50 freestyle (26.13), Katy Andersen in the 500 freestyle (6:08.36) and Kirby Quam in the 100 backstroke (1:07.10). Quam was also part of the two winning relay squads, and Dunstan was the third leg of the 200 freestyle relay. Quam, Dunstan, Samantha VonBokern and Valdez made up the 200 freestyle relay, while Maggie Fricke, Quam, Sophia Vonbokern and Samantha Vonbokern were the four members of the 400 freestyle relay. The Majettes dominated the 200 freestyle relay event, with their top three relays outperforming Williston.

“Swimmers have really stepped up in ways we weren’t sure what certain events would look like for us,” Jensen said. “They have started the season with the best attitudes, and our training has shifted a bit from previous seasons. We know that we have a lot of work to do. Athletes have really been engaged with all the things we have thrown at them this year. Their positive attitude and demeanor at each practice has really made an impact.”

Dru Zander led the Coyotes with a pair of victories in the 200 individual medley (2:17.65) and the 100 freestyle (56.20).

The Majettes host Bismarck Century for a dual meet on Friday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m.
