Honkers face Longhorns at away game

The Kenmare/Bowbells Honkers had a rough start against the Lewis & Clark Longhorns during their away game on Friday, Sept. 5.

The Longhorns were the first to receive the ball in the beginning of the ball game and took the opening drive all the way to the end score to put the first points of the game on the board. They moved the ball 47 yards over five plays for a carried touchdown during their first possession. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score 6-0 for the Longhorns before the Honkers got a chance to run the ball.

Soon after, the Longhorns had the ball in their possession again, and drove for an even quicker touchdown, covering 80 yards in just three plays. The two-point conversion would fail again, giving the Longhorns a 12-0 lead after their second possession of the game.

The Honkers first scored in the second quarter of the game with just eight minutes remaining. The drive took 11 plays over 49 yards. The touchdown came by way of a two yard run, earned by Honkers junior quarterback Jacob Zorn. The two-point conversion also failed for the Honkers, so they ended the play with just a six-point deficit.

The Longhorns would then be able to widen their lead before the end of the half, earning another touchdown on four plays over 59 yards with just seconds left in the half. The Longhorns were able to secure the two-point conversion on their third attempt and brought the score to 20-6 by the end of the half.

The Honkers were able to secure their second touchdown of the game off of a pass to senior Trevor Kreklau. Kreklau caught and ran the ball from the 40 yard line to bring the score to 12-20. A failed two-point conversion would let the Longhorns hold on to their eight point lead.

The Longerhorns wouldn’t have to keep the small lead for long, as on their first play of the very next possession, the Longhorns were able to score a 50 yard touchdown run. The Longhorns dropped another two-point conversion, turning the ball back to the Honkers at deadline.
