College Soccer: Beavers drop season opener at Regis
Minot State surrendered three first-half goals en route to a 4-1 loss at Regis University (Colo.) in its season opener on Thursday, Sept. 5.
The Rangers (1-0-0) scored twice in the opening 25 minutes, with Fernanda Rodriguez getting the scoring started in the 15th minute off a pass from Brooke Castillo. Elsie Miller doubled Regis’ advantage with an unassisted goal in the 25th minute.
Brittney Egbert cut the deficit in half, scoring the Beavers’ first goal of the season in the 33rd minute to make it 2-1, but the Rangers reclaimed the two-goal advantage right before the intermission. Paige Davis found the back of the net in the 44th minute on the Rangers’ seventh shot of the opening half. Miller was credited with the assist to finish with a goal and an assist.
The Rangers added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute off the foot of Elsa Nolen.
Rebecca Sargent recorded two saves on six shots faced for the Beavers (0-1-0). Regis’ goalkeeper Helen Stegner made five saves on six shots to earn the victory.
The Rangers held a slight 11-8 advantage in shots, with both teams recording six shots on goal. Regis finished with six corner kicks compared to four for the Beavers.
Minot State travels to play Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m.
