Mustangs coast to East-West Classic title
West Fargo Sheyenne finished Day 2 of the East-West Classic in the same spot they started: at the top.
The Mustangs – who took an eight-stroke lead into the final day of action at Jamestown Country Club – shot a team-best 315 for a two-day score of 622, besting Grand Forks Red River by 17 strokes to claim the tournament title on Tuesday, Aug. 12. Red River’s Ella Speidel and Fargo Davies’ Rose Solberg shared medalist honors with two-day scores of 146. Solberg was tied for the individual lead with Red Rivers’ Alexis Fabian following even-par 72 rounds after Day 1. Fabian finished fourth.
Mandan had the best from the West, placing fourth behind Fargo Shanley (641) with a 658. The Braves took six shots off their score from the previous day. Minot North rounded out the top five, shooting a 343 on the second day for a total of 691. The Sentinels were fifth after the opening round. Senior Kinzy Welstad carded a second round score of 75, tied for the fourth-best round of the day. Her score vaulted her up the leaderboard, moving from 24th to a tie for ninth with a two-day score of 160.
Teammate Emersyn Kopp also cracked the individual top 20, tying for 18th after a second-round 87. Ally Larson, Abigail Speer and Miyah Fundingsland all improved their scores on Day 2 for the Sentinels.
The Magicians also cracked the top 10, leapfrogging West Fargo Horace and Williston to move from 11th to 10th with a score of 735. Bismarck Century (719) made the biggest move of the day, jumping from 12th to seventh by shaving off 13 strokes on Day 2.
Minot sophomore Kenadee Burud carded the low round for the Magicians with an 87 to lead the team with a two-day total of 177 to finish 33rd overall.
Bismarck St. Mary’s (722), Bismarck Legacy (733) and Wahpeton (733) rounded out the top 10.
