Minot Metros bow out of state tournament with loss to Valley City

The Minot Metros put up seven runs and 15 hits, finding their offense that went missing the game prior, but it wasn’t enough to save their season as they dropped a 10-7 contest to Valley City in a loser-out game at the Class A American Legion State Tournament on Aug. 1.

The Metros plated four runs in the top of the first inning, but surrendered the game’s next eight runs in the second and third innings. Minot came within a run of tying the game in the fourth, but Valley City tacked on another two runs in the bottom half of the frame and held on from there to eliminate the Metros.

Levi Balas, Jace Price and Owen Sundahl all collected three hits and Minot had four extra-base hits as a team. Seven starters collected hits and five drove in runs. Brady Vigested went 2-for-4 with a double and a team-high two RBIs.

The Metros (27-19) batted through the lineup in the opening frame, recording six hits to take an early 4-0 lead.

Valley City (22-4) rallied in the second and third. Valley City brought 17 batters to the plate in those two innings and scored eight runs on seven hits. They also took advantage of three walks and an error to grab an 8-4 lead.

A three-run fourth got Minot back to within one at 8-7. Brock Thompson reached base with a lead-off error and scored on a wild pitch. Balas doubled and scored on a fielder’s choice from Gavin King before Price doubled and scored on an RBI single from Sundahl.

Valley City added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Adam Shanenko singled home Andrew Sykora and James Schwehr scored as a result of Minot’s second error of the game.

Sykora, Schwehr and Shanenko combined for six hits, four RBIs and six runs scored to fuel Valley City’s offense.

Starting at $2.99/week.
