Metros open state tourney with shutout loss to Kindred
It was a rough start to the Class A American Legion State Tournament for the Minot Metros, who dropped their opener to Kindred, 10-0, in five innings on July 31.
The Metros (27-19) mustered just two hits and committed four errors against the No. 2 seed from the East Region and now have to win to stay alive in the tournament from here on out.
The Vikings put their foot on the gas right from the jump, putting up four runs in the bottom of the first inning. G Hasse ripped an RBI single to right to score S Belaskie from third and F Johnson swatted a three-run home run later in the inning off Minot starting pitcher TJ Hjelmstad. The Metros also committed three errors in the opening frame.
Kindred (18-14) put up four more runs in the third to build an 8-0 advantage. J McDonald brought in two runs on a double as the first four batters in the inning reached base safely. McDonald would later score on a passed ball.
The game ended via mercy rule in the fifth when Kindred pushed across its final two runs of the contest. All five batters reached base and Belaskie ended it with an RBI single to score C Gette.
Remington Anderson doubled for the Metros, who were unable to advance a runner past second base.
Kindred’s E Maack went the distance on the mound, tossing a two-hitter while striking out 11.
