Class A Golf: Welstad birdies final hole to win at Century Invite
Minot North senior Kinzie Welstad continues to add to her ever-growing medalist collection after carding a 2-over 74 to capture the Century Invite by a stroke on Monday, Aug. 18, at Riverwood Golf Course for her third tournament victory in four attempts this season and second straight in dramatic fashion.
Welstad trailed Mandan’s Isabella Hale by a stroke with three holes remaining, but pulled even with a birdie on the par-5 ninth. She parred the 10th hole before making birdie on the par-3 11th to go home with medalist honors once again. The two birdies on the final three holes were her only birdies of the round. She opened the tournament with seven consecutive pars before bogeying the first, doubling the third and bogeying the eighth.
The Sentinels finished fourth as a team with a score of 353. Emersyn Kopp shot an 86 to finish tied for 12th with Bismarck Century’s Madson Dutoit and Williston’s Kali Larsen.
Mandan claimed its third team tournament title of the season with a 330 score, besting second-place Bismarck St. Mary’s by 11 strokes. Bismarck Century (345) and Bismarck Legacy (365) rounded out the top five. The Braves had two of the top three individual finishers with Hale (75) and Stray Ressler (80).
Minot High placed sixth in the 12-team tournament, just behind Legacy with a 367. The Magicians placed two golfers in the top 10. Kenadee Burud finished sixth with an 81 and Katie Thomas placed eighth with an 83. Thomas carded three birdies on her round.
Minot North and Minot High’s next tournament is the Williston Invite scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 28.
Class B Golf: DL-B claims Kenmare/Bowbells Invite
Des Lacs-Burlington had the podium all to itself, winning both the team tournament and the individual competition at the Kenmare/Bowbells Invite at Kenmare Country Club on Monday, Aug. 18.
The Lakers finished with a team score of 344, 15 shots clear of second-place Kenmare/Bowbells (359) and Laila Christianson took home medalist honors with a 3-over 73. Christianson carded 13 pars, one birdie and four bogeys, finishing six shots ahead of McKenna Mau.
The field consisted of eight schools and 11 teams as DL-B, Kenmare/Bowbells and Mohall-Sherwood all brought an ‘A’ and ‘B’ squad to the competition. Of the 11 teams, only six had enough scores to post a team total. Stanley (428), Garrison (466), Kenmare ‘B’ (495) and DL-B ‘B’ (504) rounded out the team scores. Williams County, New Town, Mohall-Sherwood and White Shield were also represented.
The Lakers’ ‘A’ team placed three golfers in the top four. Ella Pearson fired an 85 to finish third and Lauryn Christianson shot an 89 to take fourth. Kenmare/Bowbells top five golfers all finished in the top seven.
Among the teams that didn’t post a team score, New Town’s Mataya Foote had the best individual round with a 104 to finish 14th overall.
