Kopp, Thomas highlighted by WDA

Minot North senior Emersyn Kopp and Minot High’s Katie Thomas were two of the 12 girls golfers to watch this season by the Western Dakota Association.

The list features one name per each of the 12 WDA schools competing in the sport this season. Kopp is the defending West Region tournament champion, carding a 78 at Prairie West Golf Course in Mandan last year, besting teammate Kinzy Welstad and Bismarck Century’s Kylie Duchsherer each by three strokes. Kopp also took home medalist honors once during the regular season, as the Sentinels qualified for the state tournament as a team for the first time in program history, placing eighth.

Thomas was the Magicians top scorer in six of the team’s 11 tournaments, including both at the West Region tournament, where she finished with a 92, and at the state tournament, where she carded a two-round score of 189.

Bryn Anderson (Bismarck High), Ashlen Larsen (Bismarck Century), Peyton Kalanek (Bismarck Legacy), Lola Huber (Bismarck St. Mary’s), Kyndall Peterson (Dickinson), Belle Sjostrom (Jamestown), Brooklyn Monteith (Mandan), Akealyes Azure (Turtle Mountain), Harlee Olson (Watford City) and Kali Larsen (Williston) were also notable golfers to watch this season.

Huber and Monteith join Kopp as returning All-West Region selections after placing in the top 10 at the West Region tournament. Huber placed tied for fourth with an 86 and Monteith came in seventh with an 87.

The golf season tees off on Friday with the TMCHS Invitation at Carrington Cross Roads Golf Course beginning at 10 a.m. on Aug. 8.

Starting at $2.99/week.
