North Dakota’s own Layton Woodbury took home first place in the North Dakota State Fair’s Battle of Rumblehorn American Freestyle Bullfighting championships Tuesday night.

Tuesday marked the second day of the Battle of Rumblehorn event with the bullfighting championship and two more rounds of bull riding. Kolton Johnson, Cole Pfister and Dane Pokorny were the featured fighters of Tuesday night’s bullfighting Wild Card round. Pokorny earned 90 out of 100 possible points in his wild card performance, sending him to the Championship Round against his brother, Cauy Pokorny and Layton Woodbury. Cauy and Layton won their individual rounds during the first night of the Battle of Rumblehorn, allowing them to jump right to the championship.

Layton was the first to perform in the championship round and earned 86 points, eight points higher than his day one score of 78. Cauy was the second performer up and scored just 84 points, just below the leader. Dane Pokorny took to the floor last, and was unable to secure a score. Dane was rocked by his bull during Tuesday night’s fight and briefly collapsed after the bull was recalled. After a minute on the ground and a quick visit from EMS, Dane was able to get up on his own and walk away with his head held high.

Layton Woodbury was the championship round’s only North Dakota representative, hailing from Flasher. He was awarded with the championship at the conclusion of Tuesday’s event.

The Battle of Rumblehorn also featured two rounds of bull riding. Just five riders earned qualifying scores, with Stetson Long of Howe, SD taking top spot with 84 points.
