Bats carry ‘Bees to brink of postseason with win over Wausau
Playoff softball is on the verge of coming to Minot following the Minot Honeybees’ 13-7 victory over Wausau (Wisc.) on July 29.
The victory shrinks Minot’s magic number down to just one and the Honeybees could find themself already in the postseason before they take the field for their next game against Madison (Wisc) on July 31.
To ensure a trip to the postseason, the Honeybees either need one victory over the course of their final three games, or one loss in one of Mankato’s next three games against La Crosse. The Habaneros play their next game on July 30, an off day for the Honeybees.
A day after pitcher Jackie Albrecht recorded the first no-hitter in team history, it was the offense that carried the Honeybees to victory this time around. Minot recorded 13 hits, 10 of which went for extra bases. Trinity Gregg hit a pair of triples and Virginia Mambelli went 4-for-4 with three doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored. Carly Cummings had a triple and two RBIs and Shayna Myshrall, Bella Cimino and Olivia Hernandez also tallied doubles in the victory. Cimino joined Mambelli with a 4-RBI night.
The Honeybees (21-18) trailed early, but used a five-run second inning to take a 6-3 lead. Back-to-back triples from Cummings and Gregg led to three runs and consecutive doubles off the bats of Mambelli and Myshrall led to two more and ended Wausau starting pitcher Maya Rudy’s night after just 1 2/3 innings of work.
Minot struck for three more runs in the fourth to balloon its lead to 9-4. Cimino delivered a bases-loaded double to right to clear the bases, scoring Gregg, Mambelli and Myshrall on the lone hit of the inning.
The Honeybees would add two more in the fifth and the seventh, crossing the double-digit run mark for the ninth time this season. They are 8-1 when in such games, having won each of the last eight occurrences. Mambelli added two more RBIs with a bases-loaded double in the fifth and another in the seventh with her third double.
Brooklyn Hofer led the Ignite (12-29) with a 3-for-5 night at the plate.
