State golf first round ends, tight race for No. 1

The first round of the first days of the Class A & Class B Boys’ State Golf Tournaments opened Tuesday morning.

Fargo Davies currently leads the Class A tournament with an overall score of fourteen over. Senior Porter Seidel is their current top golfer. He was seeded first for the team heading into the tournament and ended with a score of one over par for a total of 73 strokes.

Minot North High School follows close behind Fargo Davies with an overall score of 16 over. Their top scorer in the first day of the tournament was senior Kasen Rostad, who also ended with a score of one over par with 73 strokes. He, Seidel and two other players all tied for fifth in the individual leaderboard.

Senior Bennett Bartsch tied for fourteenth individually during the first day of the tournament. He ended the day with a score of four over par with a total of 76 strokes. He was seeded second on the team going into the tournament and will start Wednesday’s round at 9:10 a.m. on the first hole of the course.

Minot High is currently placed ninth in the competition with an overall score of 28 over. Senior Fischer Johnson had the team’s best round on Tuesday with a score of three over par with 75 strokes. Johnson is tied for tenth with three other players individually. Johnson came to the tournament seeded fifth for Minot High.

The second day of tournaments will start Wednesday at 7:40 a.m., but the first Minot athlete won’t tee off until 7:49 a.m. at the tenth hole. The first Minot player to begin is sophomore Carsen Gartner. He is seeded sixth for the team and ended the first day of the tournament with a score of eighteen over par. He will be playing with Jace Runsvold of West Fargo Sheyenne, Jace Belland of Dickinson and Jackson Bergman of Grand Forks Central.

Minot North’s Rostad will begin at 9:28 a.m. at the first hole. He will be playing alongside West Fargo’s Breck Wilson, St. Mary’s Quinn Shillingstad and Fargo Davies’ Porter Seidel.

Century High School sophomore Parker Beck ended the day in first place individually with a score of five under par. His round included six birdies and an eagle at the eighteenth hole, his last of the day.

The Class A tournament is being held at the Vardon Golf Club in Minot.

The Class B tournament also concluded its first day on Tuesday at the Jamestown Country Club. Oak Grove Lutheran School is currently leading the tournament with a round score of sixteen over. Their top golfer was sophomore Mason Paulus. He earned a score of two over par with 74 total strokes.

Bishop Ryan senior Jett Lundeen ended the day tied for 54th place with a score of thirteen over par. He and senior Jace Schwan were the only Bishop Ryan golfers to qualify for the state tournament. Schwan is tied for 76th heading into the second day of tournaments. He ended with a score of 16 over par.

Lundeen is scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m. at the first hole of the course on Wednesday. Schwan is scheduled to begin at 9:12 a.m., also at the first hole.
