Honeybees sting Steam for sweep in weekend series
The Minot Honeybees won all three games in their series against the La Crosse Steam over this past weekend.
The Honeybees played a double header on Saturday at Corbett Field. They were the first home games they have played this season.
The first game started at 5:05 p.m. on Saturday. The Steam took an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs while the Honeybees ended with none.
Neither team scored in the second and third innings. The Steam widened the gap in the fifth inning with an additional two runs leaving the score 5-0 at the end of the inning. The Honeybees quickly turned the tides in the sixth inning.
The Honeybees’ first run came by way of a single into left field hit by No. 18 Olivia Hernandez. The hit brought home No. 15 Virginia Mambelli from third base. No. 8 Reagan Winn scored the next run off of an error at shortstop.
Hernandez scored the third run herself off of another error, this time at second base. Honeybees No. 1, Makenna Alexander scored again when Shayna Myshrall was walked while bases were loaded.
The Steam switched out pitchers before Bella Cimino was hit by a pitch, bringing Trinity Gregg home to tie the game 5-5 in the middle of the inning.
A double into left field during the very next at bat by Virginia Mambelli brought home Taylor Chillingworth and Shayna Myshrall. Bella Cimino scored next off of a hit by Reagan Winn. The last run of the inning was scored by Virginia Mambelli off of a single hit by Olivia Hernandez.
The inning ended after Makenna Alexander was thrown out. The Honeybees went through thirteen at bats during the inning and took the lead with a score of 9-5.
The Steam earned another two runs during the sixth inning, but were unable to match the Honeybees’ score.
The Honeybees continued to widen the gap in the bottom of the sixth by scoring another six runs. Taylor Chillingworth hit a three-run homerun to bring herself, Trinity Gregg and Carly Cummings home to make the score 12-7 in the middle of the inning.
Shayna Myshrall, Virginia Mambelli and Reagan Winn all scored three at bats in a row. The Honeybees were unable to score during the rest of the inning, leaving the score 15-7 at the bottom of the sixth.
The Steam were only able to score an additional three runs in the seventh inning, giving the Honeybees the win at the end of the top of the seventh.
The final score of the first game was 15-10 for the Honeybees.
The second game of the double header started at 7:35 p.m. at Corbett Field on Saturday evening. Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. Both runs for the Honeybees came off a two-run home run hit by Shayna Myshrall at her first at bat of the game. She and Carly Cummings scored to tie the game before the end of the first inning.
The Honeybees proceeded to score in every remaining inning of the game except for the fourth. They scored five in the second, one in the third, four in the fifth and three in the sixth. The Storm were unable to keep up, scoring only three additional runs after the first inning. The score at the end of the game was 15-5 for the Honeybees.
The last game of the series was held on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Corbett Field. The Honeybees scored seven runs during the game, including a two-run home run hit by Bella Cimino to bring herself and Carly Cummings home during the third inning. The score at the end of the game was 7-4 for the Honeybees.
The Honeybees ended the series sweep with a season record of 4-2 and put them in the lead for the region. The Honeybees will next play on Tuesday, June 17 and Wednesday, June 18 in Madison, WI against the Madison Night Mares. They will be the Hooneybees’ first games against the Night Mares this season.
