FARGO — The Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis & Clark Lakers were down 1-4 in the third inning when shortstop, junior Logen Ystaas stepped up to the plate.
Ystaas took 10 pitches in the batter’s box before she was able to get a good piece of the ball, but it was on the eleventh that she turned the tide of the game.
Ystaas sailed that eleventh pitch straight over the fence in left-center field.
“That was probably the longest at-bat I’ve ever had,” Ystaas said. “Ending it with [the home run] was crazy. It just brought the energy to the rest of the team.”
Ystaas was right, her home run in the third inning helped bring the momentum back to the Lakers. Senior Gretchen Deaver, catcher for the Lakers, brought home an additional two more runs after she drove a flyball single into right field. The score only got to 4-4 at the end of the third, but the Des Lacs-Burlington/Lewis & Clark team kept up the pressure.

The Lakers brought home another three runs during the fourth, including a two-run single into right field by senior first baseman Aubree Schepp.
Ystaas hit an RBI in the fifth to bring home seventh-grade Harper Feller from third and the additional runs from the sixth innings added up to a 12 run swing for DLBLC. Hillsboro-Central Valley hadn’t scored a single run since Ystaas’ homer.
The final score saw the Lakers beating out HCV 13-4, bringing them to the state championships for Class B softball.
“They just have to have a little spark, and then it ignites,” said Lakers head coach Peggy Person.
Ysaats said that sparking their offense is how the Lakers can bring home their first state championship title.
