The Minot High School girls’ tennis has taken home the school’s first state title of the year during their tournament on Thursday.
The Majettes swept the Grand Forks Red River team during their finals match Thursday evening.
Minot High junior Kyllie Fettig is one of three singles players for the team. She took on Red River senior Addy Lommen and won the first two matches 6-1 and 6-0.
“It feels so good,” said Fettig about the team’s win. “We have worked so hard to get here, and worked so hard in practice. I am so proud of how our team showed up today.”
Fettig said that they planned to celebrate with Applebee’s, but she still has to prepare for the next two days of individual play.
Junior Grace Olson, who is also competing in the state individuals double tournament, faced off against Red River senior Maddie Nelson. Olson was also able to win the first two matches with scores of 6-3 and 6-1.
“The whole team had a huge role in every step of the way to get us here,” Olson said. “I’m proud of all the effort and hard work [the] team put in.”
Olson only feels more excited and driven heading into the individual tournament. She said she is ready to go into the tournament with a positive attitude and work hard.
Sophomore Ava Thuner was the last of three singles players for Minot in the tournament. She played against Red River freshman Ruby Schneider. Thunder secured the win in two matches with scores of 6-0 and 6-2.
The first of the two Minot High doubles teams in the tournament consisted of senior Lila Olson and freshman Ella Sherven. Lila is also competing in the state individuals doubles tournament with junior Grace Olson.
Lila and Ella were able to take out Red River sophomores Lauren Endres and Elizabeth Kilgore in two matches, both with scores of 6-4.
“It feels like such a blessing being a freshman and playing for the first time in the state tournament,” said Ella.
When she had found out that they had won, it took everything in Ella to keep from cheering out loud.
“I was so proud of all the work we have put in from the beginning to the end,” she said. “I cannot wait to see what happens next year and the years after that with all the potential and fun with this team.”
The second doubles team for Minot High was freshman McKenna Odahlen and seventh grader Alivia Sherven. They played Red River freshman Kalli Block and senior Brielle Larson. The Majettes won in the second and third matches with scores of 6-3 and 10-5 while dropping the first match with a score of 3-6.
The final score for Minot against Red River was 5-0. This is Minot High’s eighth state team tennis championship, and only the third since 2018.
