Lions ambush Troops, force rematch for state berth

The Bishop Ryan Lions secured a win against the Garrison Troopers during the NDHSAA Class B Region 6 baseball tournament at Hoeven Park on Friday with a final score of 9-3.
The first two innings of the game started out slow. Bishop Ryan was able to secure the first run in the top of the first inning.
It was scored by junior Jack Passa after a single hit by junior Seth Wolf blew by the Troopers’ pitcher.
The Lions were able to keep the Troopers at bay during the bottom of the first with Bishop Ryan senior Drew Zwak pitching.
No runs were scored and a double play at second and first ended the inning with a score of 1-0 for the Lions.
The second inning passed with neither team scoring a run and both halves ending in strikeouts.
The third inning is where Bishop Ryan found its groove.
The first run of the inning was scored after Wolf was hit by a pitch with bases loaded, bringing senior Jett Lundeen home and making the score 2-0.
A missed ball by the Garrison’s catcher allowed Passa to steal home, before a bounced single by senior Ramsey Walz let another score, bringing it to 4-0.
Bishop Ryan senior Parker Baier and Walz were both able to steal home, widening the gap to 6-0.
Garrison switched pitchers before a game of chicken with the first base runner leads to another home base steal.
Second and home were both stolen during Passa’s next at bat, bringing the score to 8-0 before Passa was thrown out at first to end the half.
All in all, the Lions scored 7 runs and made it through their entire line up during the top of the third.
A pop-fly during the bottom of the third allowed Garrison to score their first run of the game, but another fly ball ended the inning before they were able to catch up.
Zwak was the Lion’s only run in the fourth inning, being brought in by freshman Calvin Olsen.
The Lions gave up two more runs to Garrison in the bottom of the fourth, bringing the score to 9-3 for Bishop Ryan.
The game slowed through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings with neither team scoring a run.
The game ended 9-3 for the Lions, meaning they are just one win away from being named the Class B Region 6 Champions. They will be taking on Garrison again Saturday May 24 at 1 p.m. at Hoeven Park.
