Magi on their way to state swim and dive meet
The Minot High Magi swam their way to a second place finish at the Western Dakota Association (WDA) swim and dive championships. The Magi competed in 12 events and finished with an overall score of 338.5 to take second place.
The Magi took top five finishes in two of the three relay events.
In the 200-yard medley relay Minot HIgh finished with a close second behind Bismarck Legacy. Carter Larson, Logan Hill, Luke Neumann and Peter Wake competed as Minot High’s relay team and finished with a time of 1:40.13.
The Magi also took a fifth place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The Magi athletes Wake, Otto Williamson, Neumann and Gavin King competed and took home a 1:35.84 fifth place finish.
Minot High didn’t have an athlete place top five in the 200 free, but they did have several athletes swim state qualifying times. Andrew Francis in sixth place with a time of 1:54.14, King with a time of 2:00.80 and Jason Dodds finishing at 2:03.15.
In the 200 IM Minot High had athletes all over the board.
Logan Hill finished in second place with a time of 2:02.39, six seconds faster than the next closest athlete. Neumann finished in sixth with a state qualifying time of 1:12.81, Two more Minot High athletes, Jon Folk and Barrett Hannegrefs both finished with state qualifying times.
Minot High didn’t have any athletes in the top five for the 50 freestyle but they had several with qualifying times farther down on the board. Qualifying time in the 50 freestyle was 25.22, Wake, Jameson Langager, Tyler Burns, Williamson, Kayden Gutnecht and Jaxon Lee all finished within this time.
Same in the 100 freestyle. No athletes finished high on the board but several made state qualifying times. Minot High’s Talmage Pehrson, King, Gutknecht and Tim Sharp-Driver all made the qualifying time of 56.32.
Minot HIgh had two dividers finish in the top five. Tayson Solper scored 387.35 and Holden Williams in fifth with 368.15.
The Magi’s Carter Larson snuck in for a fifth place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.31. Several more Minot High swimmers followed with state qualifying times farther down on the board.
Minot High’s Andrew Francis, a freshman, finished in third place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:14.62.
In the 100 backstroke Minot High put two athletes in the top five. Larson finished in fourth with a time of 55.52 followed by teammate Caden Brey in fifth with a time of 58.52.
Two Magi also made top five in the 100 breaststroke. Hill finished in second with a time of 59:44. Wake followed in third with a time of 1:00.83, almost four seconds faster than the next athlete.
In the final event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, Minot High took a seventh place finish with Francis, Hannegrefs, Larson and Hill.
Overall Minot High took second out of eight teams at the WDA Championship. The state championship will be held at the Hulbert Aquatic Center in Fargo March 7-8.
