Braves, Royals win and advance to state tourney

Kari Gibb/MDN South Prairie-Max freshman Kinley Schilla (34) goes for a shot while Hazen players foul her in the Division A girls basketball state qualifying play-in game on Saturday, March 1, at the Minot Auditorium.
The seeding and qualifying games are complete and the 2025 NDHSAA Division A Girls Basketball State Tournament is scheduled for March 6-8, 2025 at the MSU Dome.
R3-3 South Prairie-Max 54, R4-2 Hazen 14
The Royals girls won the tip to start the game and never looked back. Hazen kept pace with some high energy to start the game. Both teams had pre-game jitters that were evident with turnovers and missed shots.
By the middle of the first quarter of play, South Prairie-Max had their press defense working and began to find the basket taking a 9-6 lead, forcing a Hazen timeout. Each team was working to establish their own game plan and tempo at that point.
The Royal girls worked to a 16-10 lead at the end of the first quarter of play. The second quarter of play was all South Prairie-Max and Skotti Beck. The Royals led 27-12 going into the half.
The Royals outscored the Bison 11-2 in the second quarter with Beck posting 11 of her team high 15 points in the first half of play. The trap defense by the Royals forced turnovers and the shooting percentage kept getting better for South Prairie-Max as the game progressed.
By the end of the third quarter of play, the Royals held the 48-14 lead and had outscored Hazen 21-2 in the third quarter. The bench rotation began before the final half of the fourth quarter.
Besides the 15 by Beck, the Royals were led by Maycie Talbott with nine points while Abby Mikkelson and Azjiah Trader each added six in the win.
Hazen was led by Macey Van Inwagen with six points and Macee Smith with four.
