MSU golfers getting back from winter break
The Minot State University (MSU) golf spring season will start in early March. The men’s team performed very well throughout the fall season and hope to improve as they get closer to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) tournament.
“All five of our top five are really really good players and we can count on them to shoot good scores, they don’t care who ends up shooting the low score they all just want to compete,” said MSU head golf Coach Eli Mihalick.
The men’s team has been competing for the team’s benefit not for individual competition, but they do have one stand out player. Chase Gedak is coming close to matching, if not surpassing the men’s career scoring average.
Even with such a good chance to be one of the Beavers best golfers Gedak is still wanting to work towards the team’s success more than his own.
“I’d like to play good for the team, but that means playing good individually too,” said Gedak
The Beaver women didn’t finish their last season as high as they hoped, but they stayed competitive throughout the fall and are planning to build off their last season for better success.
Coach Mihalick said that his team needs to work on their mental game, “course management stuff and just not making bad decisions and if you do make one move on, get back into the headspace you should be in to play good golf.”
The NSIC preview tournaments in March should give the Beaver athletes the best experience they can get for the conference tournament at the end of the season. With three weeks in between the preview and the conference tournament Mikalick is working hard to make sure his athletes peak at the right time.
The spring season will start with the men and women in Arizona. The Men will compete in the Maverick Desert Classic March 10-11 and the women will be at the SMSU Classic March 17-18. The NCIS Preview will be in Missouri with the women competing March 31-April 1.
The men’s team will follow a few weeks after and will compete March 24-25. The last competitions of the regular season will send the Beavers to Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the Augustana Spring Invite, both men’s and women’s teams will be competing at the same time April 7-8.
The Beavers will end their season in Missouri at the NSIC Tournament. The men will compete April 25-27 and the women April 17-19.
