MSU’s Van De Griend honored after setting single-season record

For the third time this season, Minot State University’s (MSU) junior forward Caleb Van De Griend was named the best player for the weekend in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).

The Beavers’ 6-foot-8 forward from Bridgetown, Australia set a new single-season MSU record for rebounds over the weekend, helping lead No. 22 Beavers to a sweep at home and earning him NSIC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors.

Van De Griend was also named NSIC Player of the Week on December 2 and December 23. His three NSIC Player of the Week awards this season leads the league.

Van De Griend averaged 21.5 points and 11.5 rebounds on the weekend, which included 20 points and 15 rebounds Saturday in a 75-68 win over Minnesota Duluth.

Saturday’s effort on the glass gave Van De Griend 303 rebounds this season, a new single-season MSU record as he passed Tyler Rudolph’s mark of 291 set in 2016-17.

Friday, in a 92-78 win over Concordia, St. Paul in a battle for 2nd place in the NSIC standings, Van De Griend led the way for the Beavers with 23 points and eight rebounds.
