MSU overtime win followed by 5-2 victory to sweep Maryville

The No. 6 ranked Minot State University (MSU) Beavers women’s hockey defeats No. 3 Maryville University 3-1 to sweep the two-game series on Saturday, January 11. With the win, the Beavers improve their record to 16-5-2, while Maryville drops to 13-6-4 on the season.
Maryville opened up the scoring at 4:13 into the first period with a power play goal scored by Colleen O’Leary to go ahead 0-1.
MSU tied the game up at 1-1 at 9:55 into the second period on a goal scored by Cameron Schmidt. Beaver’s goalie and Minot High alum, Jillian Ackerman, held Maryville scoreless in the second period, tallying four saves on four shots on goal.
The Beavers took a 2-1 lead at 12:31 into the third period on a goal scored by Abby Pineau. MSU put the game on ice when they extended their lead to 3-1 at 16:15 into the period on a goal scored by Paige Kozak
Ackerman held Maryville scoreless in the third period, tallying four saves on four shots on goal, to secure the 3-1 victory.
Makena Welby, Olivia Opheim (2) and Abby Tallman were credited with assists in the game. Ackerman led the way in goal for the Beavers, tallying 21 saves on 21 shots on goal, improving her record to 4-0-0 on the season.
Following the two-game series sweep over No. 3 Maryville University, the Beavers will be back in action on the road in Fremont, Nebraska, to take on Midland University in a two-game series. Game one is scheduled for Friday, January 17, at 5:00 p.m., and game two is scheduled for Saturday, January 18, at 4:00 p.m..
MSU Women 3, Maryville University 2 (F/OT)
The No. 6 MSU Beavers women’s hockey team defeated No. 3 Maryville University in an overtime thriller on Friday, January 10, with a final score of 3-2..
MSU opened up the scoring at 5:19 into the first period on a goal scored by Addison Dyck to go ahead 1-0. The goal scored by Dyck is her first goal of her college career. The Beavers’s goalie, Haylie Biever, held Maryville scoreless in the first period, tallying eight saves on eight shots on goal.
Maryville scored the lone goal of the second period at 8:58 into the period scored by Sydney Poisson to tie the game at 1-1.
The Beavers took a 2-1 lead at 6:05 into the third period on a power play goal scored by Abby Tallman. After pulling their goalie and making it 6 on 5, Maryville tied the game at 2-2 with 24 seconds left in the period on a goal scored by Grace Karunakar.
It only took one shot in the overtime period for Minot State to capture the 3-2 victory. The game-winning goal was scored by Paige Kozak at 1:16 into the overtime period.
Paige Kozak and Journey Miller (2) were credited with assists in the game. Biever led the way in net for the Beavers, tallying 24 saves on 26 shots on goal, improving her record to 6-4-2.
