Magi grapplers top team at Badlands Classic
KILLDEER – The Minot High boys wrestling team spent Saturday, January 25, competing with 16 other teams for some serious mat time as the season winds down. The Magi posted 180 team points for first place at the event with South Border in second place with 173 team points and Velva in third at 164 points.
It was the first invitational, tournament of multiple team event win for Minot High this season.
Lincoln Brooks, at 215-pounds for Minot High, took first place with 27 team points to lead the scoring for the team. Brooks won by major decision over Shane Nitschke from South Border.
At 145-lbs, Magi’s Kaden Kraft earned the team 26.5 points with a first place finish with a win over Joseph Keller of South Border. At 172 for Minot High, Noah Bledsoe added 20 team points with a second place finish.
For the Magi, at 285, teammates Liam Neff and Kale Risbrudt faced off in the final for third place with Neff pinning his Minot High teammate who took fourth.
Another Kraft grappler, Korbin at 127 for the Magi, took fourth place with a loss to Rylan Better of South Border in the final.
Three of Minot High wrestlers took fifth place at the Badlands. Kaden Philion at 133, Ty Burton at 139 and Tucker Nelson at 215 each placed fifth at the event. Ben Hedberg added team points with a sixth place finish at 107 while Tayven Blackaby at 121 also took sixth at the event for the Magi.
At 114, Eliah Rogers placed seventh while Scott Triplett was eighth for Minot High at 152. Minot High was not the only local team at the Badlands Classic.
Des Lacs-Burlington had three wrestlers place fourth at the classic. Breyden Buee at 152, Kenny Smith at 189 and Jonathan Smith at 215 each finished with points for the Lakers by making it to the third place match.
Stanley had Cohen Bell at 127 take home the first place medal with a decision over Charlie Irwin from New Salem-Almont. At 114, Louden Haugen took second place for the Blue Jays with a loss in the final match to Dickinson’s Jake Glaser.
At 189, Trey Bohmbach took third place and added 21 points to the Stanley team total. At 285, Levi Uran took sixth place and added points for the Blue Jays.
Kane Reep was Stanley’s rep at 145, who placed seventh at the classic. At 133, Brayden Fritl added to the team total with an eighth place finish at 133 for Stanley.
Velva had two grapplers take home first place medals. Brextyn Yanish beat Ryker Vetter from South Border by fall for the first place finish at 139 while Darson Hildre won by fall over Cole Stock, also from South Border.
Maddox Campbell at 160 for the Aggies dropped the final match to Conrad Kopari from Dickinson for a second place finish. Madden Barstad at 172, Lucas Soli at 133 and Isaiah Hackman at 107 each took third place for Velva.
At 114 for the Aggies, Alex Leier took fourth place while Lexton Smith (152) and Jayden Foss (215) each finished in sixth place for Velva. Noah Werner at 189 added to the team total with a seventh place finish at 189 for the Aggies.
