MSU women drop home game despite defensive effort

The Minot State University (MSU) women’s basketball team held St. Cloud State to just 36.8% shooting from the field, but fell 63-51 to the Huskies at home Friday at the MSU Dome.
The Beavers (1-8, 0-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Sydney Gustavsson, who had 16 points and seven rebounds. Maya Aguilar added 11 points and two steals and Jessica Mogen chipped in as well with ten points off the bench.
MSU’s defense held St. Cloud State to only 36.8 percent shooting from the field, including 28.6 percent from beyond the arc.
MSU struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Beavers fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 29-20 by the time halftime rolled around.
St. Cloud State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 34-20 advantage before MSU went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three basket from Mogen, to trim its deficit to 34-26 with 6:13 to go in the third.
St. Cloud State countered and stretched its lead to 48-32 heading into the fourth. MSU knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 12 total points.
St. Cloud State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 52-35 advantage before MSU went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Mogen’s layup, to shrink the deficit to 52-42 with 6:30 to go in the contest.
St. Cloud State responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 63-51.
