Round one of district play in the books
District 11 at Velva high school
VELVA – The first round of the district 11 volleyball tournament was played on Thursday, October 31, at Velva high school and there was at least one upset in the scorebooks.
Bottineau will face Velva today, November 1, while the top seeded Rugby will play Newburg-Westhope and Drake-Anamoose will battle with Nedrose in the semifinal rounds of play.

The hosting school nearly upset the second seeded team from Drake-Anamoose. Velva took frame one handily 25-11 before Drake-Anamoose won frame two 25-15 to even the contest at 1-1 going into the third frame.
Velva took frame three 25-20 for the 2-1 lead while Drake-Anamoose won the fourth frame 25-23 for the 2-2 score. The deciding fifth frame was as tight as the first four with the higher seed outlasting the hosts 17-15 for the win.

#3 Bottineau 0
The Cardinals won 25-17, 25-23 and 25-22 in an upset of the third seeds from Bottineau. The sweep was the only one at the first round of play in Velva.
#4 Newburg-Westhope 3, #5 TGU 2
The fourth seeds from Newburg-Westhope battled back to take the win over the fifth seeded TGU team and move forward in district play.
TGU won frame one 25-20 and frame four 25-18 while Newburg-Westhope took frame two and three 25-21 and 25-13 respectively. The fifth and deciding frame was won 15-12 by the higher seeded team.
District 16 at Divide County high school
CROSBY – The higher ranked teams at the district 16 volleyball tournament edged those lower seeds with no sweeps in the two games of round one play at Divide high school.
The top seeded Kenmare-Bowbells will play Powers Lake-Burke Central today, November 1, while Ray will face Tioga in the semifinal rounds of the district 16 tournament at Divide County.
#4 Powers Lake-Burke Central 3 #5 Divide County 1
The hosting team from Divide County took frame one 25-20 and had upset on their minds. Powers Lake-Burke Central took the next three frames 25-23, 25-13 and 25-17 for the win and the chance to move forward at the tournament.
#3 Tioga 3, #6 Stanley 2
The Blue Jays lost the first two frames 25-15 and 28-26 but bounced back to win frames three and four 25-22 and 25-18 to force a fifth frame with the Pirates. Tioga won 15-12 to move forward into round two.
