Minot North edges Williston
Both local boys tennis teams were active in the sun for the day with Minot North hosting Williston and Minot High traveling to Jamestown.
Minot North 5, Williston 4
The Minot North Sentinels boys tennis team enjoyed the splendid weather by hosting the Williston Coyotes in Western Dakota Association (WDA) action at Hammond Park on Tuesday, September 17, and were able to use the home court advantage to their benefit with the win.
At the number one singles, Parker Vigestad worked hard for the win over Kallon DeLorme with 7-6, 7-6 scores for Minot North. Sentinels Rylan Thompson beat Williston’s Kane Shannon 6-2, 6-2 at the number two singles for the 2-0 lead.
In one of the singles more competitive matches, Williston’s Gavin Douglas defeated Minot North’s Colton Griffith at number three singles 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4 for the first win in singles for the Coyotes. Sentinels Brayden Callahan won 6-3, 6-1 at the number four singles over Evan Fisher to keep the 3-1 lead for Minot North.
At number five singles, Peyton Opp beat Williston’s Carter Anfinson 7-6(3), 1-6 and 7-5 while the Coyotes TJ Nehring took the win over Minot North’s Reece Blikre 6-4, 7-6(4) at the number six singles for the Sentinels to hold a 4-2 lead going into doubles.
Vigestad and Callahan beat Shannon and Fisher 4-6, 6-4 and 7-6(2) at the number one doubles for Minot North. DeLorme and Nehring beat Thompson and Opp 5-7, 6-2 and 6-0 at the number two doubles for Williston to narrow the margin.
Douglas and Anfinson would add one more win for the Coyotes at the number three doubles over Griffith and Blikre 6-0, 6-7(8) and 6-1 but Minot North held on for the 5-4 win and their first WDA dual win of the season.
Minot High 7, Jamestown 2
JAMESTOWN – The Magicians made the trip to Jamestown and improved their WDA record in the process.
Grayson Schaeffer beat Luke LeFevre 6-4, 6-2 at the number one singles to start Minot High off right. At number two singles, Aidan Diehl followed that with a 6-1, 6-1 win over hosting Braxton Burkett for the second win of the day for Minot High.
Jamestown’s Jaxton Dawson edged Nolan Moore at third singles 0-6, 6-4 and 6-4 for the Blue Jays. Thomas Griffith faced Aden Oettle at number four singles and beat him 6-2, 6-2 for Minot High. Oliver Thompson did the same for the Magicians at the number five singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over hosting Landry Rham.
Magician Conor Odahlen won at the number six singles over Kale Backen from Jamestown 6-2, 6-1 for the 5-1 lead headed into the doubles matches.
Grayson and Callahan played at the number one doubles for Minot High and faced LeFevre and Burkett. The Hosts beat the Magicians 7-6(6), 6-2 for the win.
At the number two doubles, Deihl and Moore faced Dawson and Backen with the visitors beating the hosts 6-1, 6-2 to even the wins. Odahlen and Griffith played at the number three doubles for Minot High and defeated Oettle and Rham 6-0, 6-0 for the final win and the 7-2 score for Minot High.
Both Minot North and Minot High will be at Hammond Park on Thursday, September 19, to play a dual that was rescheduled from Monday due to the deluge in Minot that day.
