Magi beat Midgets, second shutout of week

Kari Gibb/MDN Minot High sophomore Tayson Solper (20) attempts a bicycle kick on goal while senior Kyle Eklund (27) and sophomore Nolan Schmidt (12) watch excitedly for the results in action against Dickinson in WDA action at Duane Carlson Stadium on Saturday, September 21.

Minot High boys soccer hosted the Midgets from DIckinson for the chance to take sole possession of the second spot in the Western Dakota Association (WDA) standings with three games left in the regular season.

The 7-0 win over Dickinson put Minot High (8-3-2, 10-3-2) alone behind Jamestown (12-0-0, 12-0-0) in the standings with a major showdown with the Blue Jays on Tuesday, October 1, at Duane Carlson Stadium.

Minot High started the scoring against Dickinson after just four minutes had ticked off the clock in the first half when Dylan Jackson found Justice Ambsury for the goal. The Magicians kept working with several shots on goal, including corner kicks. The clock ticked down to zeros and the teams entered the halftime break with Minot High leading 1-0 after forty minutes of play.

The halftime was just what the Magicians needed to kickstart the net action.

Two minutes into the second half, Samuel Echanis found net from a Dylan Oswalt assist. Two minutes later, Vinny Palaia had the same result from the same passer. Six minutes later, Ambsury scored his second goal of the game, unassisted.

With the lead at 4-0 after 13 minutes had ticked off the clock, Oswalt found Jackson for the next goal. Half way through the forty minutes of the second, Kyle Eklund found Tayson Solper for the score and 14 minutes later, Solper found the net again with the assist by Cale Workman this time for the 7-0 win.

Grayden Wald faced no shots on goal in the net for the Magicians while Minot High had eight shots on goal in addition to the seven that lit up the scoreboard.

Minot High has outscored opponents 14-11 in the first half of play this year, but the Magicians have outscored the others 12-4 in the second half of play.

Minot High faces Minot North at home on Tuesday, September 24, before hosting the undefeated Jamestown on Tuesday, October 1, with only a trip to Bismarck High to end the regular season on Thursday, October 3, before postseason seeding and play.

Starting at $2.99/week.
