Lakers handle visiting Braves in three sets

Kari Gibb/MDN Des Lacs-Burlington senior Kaylee Werner (12) saves the ball from hitting the court as her teammates and coaches watch in the second frame of action against visiting Turtle Mountain Community High School on Monday, September 16, at the Lakers home court.

The Braves from the Turtle Mountain Community High School made the trip to Des Lacs-Burlington high school to face the hosting Lakers in a rare Monday evening of volleyball. The action on the court was just as fast paced as the pitter-patter of the rain outside the building.

The Lakers would win 25-11, 25-18 in the closest frame and 25-13 for the 3-0 sweep for the home team.

The Lakers and Braves kept pace point for point to begin each frame. The Braves battled with solid net play in the evenly matched game up front.

Neither team had superiority in attacks. The home team began pulling away in the middle portion of each frame and the combination of aces and return volleys would build the gaps for each session. Having the patience to work the volleys was shown by both home and visiting team.

Des Lacs-Burlington freshman Piper Feller worked the net with juniors Logen Ystaas and Mycah Faken to lead the Lakers in Kills with eight for Feller and Ystaas and five for Faken. Faken also had two aces and two blocks.

Senior Kaylee Werner had 22 assists, one block and 14 digs in the game. Feller added 8 digs while junior Hope Walen had a block at the net as well in the win.

The Lakers are in Region 6, district 12 with South Prairie-Max atop the standings at 9-1 with Our Redeemer’s and Bishop Ryan between Des Lacs-Burlington at the top rung. The Lakers (7-3) will face Berthold on Thursday at home.
