Sentinels, Majettes qualify several golfers for state meet

BISMARCK – The Bismarck Legacy Invitational played at the Riverwood Golf Course on Tuesday, August 20, was a state qualifying event. The rules for qualifying are to be under the score that is higher – par plus 15 or the medalist score plus 15 for the day.

Bismarck St Mary’s placed first with two in the top three individuals with a score of 334 while Mandan had three players in the top ten for second with a 338 score. Minot North also had two in the top three with a team score of 339 for third place. Minot High scored 362 to take sixth and missed a tie for fifth place by one stroke.

The medalist was Bismarck St. Mary’s senior Abigail Schneider with a 77 score that put the state qualifying score at 92 for the invitational. Minot North had four qualify and Minot High had three make the cut as well.

Sentinels junior Kinzy Welstad shot a 78 for second place behind the medalist. She qualified for state. Fellow junior Emersyn Kopp shot an 80 and tied for third place as well as qualified for state.

Minot North senior Carlie Brown shot 90 and finished in 20th place as well as qualifying for state. Freshman Katelyn Bast recorded a 91 for 23rd place and just made the state cut.

Sentinels junior Ally Larson missed the cut by two at 94 to finish at 31st for the Sentinels. Fellow junior Abigail Speer shot a 103 for 48th place and added to the total score and the third place finish for Minot North.

Minot High junior Katie Thomas shot an 86 for 12th place and qualified for state. RIght behind her was freshman Kenadee Burud who shot an 87 for 15th place and qualified as well. Senior Samantha Lentz scored an 89 for 19th place.

“Katie, Kenadee, and Samantha shot their personal best scores to qualify for the state tournament as individuals,” said Minot High girls golf coach Scott Foltz of the effort. “Our girls are not real big hitters but they kept the ball in the fairway and at Riverwood you don’t have to be long.”

Minot High junior Maura Alexander just missed the cut at 100 for 39th place while Majette sophomore Taylor Deslauriers hit a 107 for 51st and the sixth place finish as a team.

Bismarck St. Mary’s was the top team at the invitational. Schneider hit for 77 while junior Lola Huber shot an 80, senior Grace Rieger was in at 87, junior Kate Wilson shot a 90 while freshman Addie Zimmerman and senior Maleah Hall each carded a 102 for the day.

Mandan was second for the day. Freshman Isabella Hale and junior Brooklyn Monteith each shot 83, junior Stray Ressler hit 85 while fellow junior Brittyn Mettler was at 87 for the day. Senior Kenzie Miller shot 92 while fellow senior Karley Gange-Gerhardt hit 101 for the team.

The teams will be at the Bismarck Century invitational on Friday, August 23, at the Tom O’Leary Golf Course.
