Water-soaked teams battle at Corbett

Eight teams made the trip to Minot for day one of the Western Dakota Association (WDA) baseball tournament Thursday, May 23, and needed rain gear and umbrellas. Despite the fans sitting in parkas under blankets, the action on the field was good.

Minot High 14, Bismarck High 4

Minot High scored four runs at the bottom of the first inning of play and three runs in both the bottom of the second and third innings enroute to a 14-4 win over Bismarck High.

Junior Easton Panesuk started the game with a single. Junior Aidan Diehl was next with a bunt that he reached first on. After a balk call, the runners advanced and a single by K Burke scored Panesuk. Senior Parker Hann then doubled to bring the two runners to home plate making the score 3-0 with no outs. Senior Braden Nelson hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Hann to score on an error.

After three batters were retired at the top of the second inning, sophomore Tegan Schindler singled for the Magicians. Junior Treyton Stewart then doubled to score Schindler. Panesuk doubled to score Stewart. Two batters later, Hann singled to score Panesuk for the 7-0 lead.

At the bottom of the third inning, junior Carson Deaver singled to start the inning. Senior Adam Roedocker singled next to score the run. Schindler singled next to score Roedocker. With two out, Schindler scored on a wild pitch for the Magicians to take the 10-0 lead.

Bismarck High would get all four runs at the top of the fifth inning of play while Minot High would add four more over the final three innings of play.

As a team, the Magicians were 13-for-28 at the plate with only one error. Deaver pitched three innings and allowed one hit. Burke pitched two and two-third innings and allowed four runs on two hits with an earned run mark of two. Senior Jagger Swartwout pitched one-third inning to end the game.

Panesuk was a perfect 3-for-3 while Schindler was 2-for-2 at the plate. Hann and Burke each had two hits in the game.

Bismarck was 3-for-22 at the plate. Sophomore Aiden Rakowski pitched three innings and allowed ten runs on 11 hits with an earned run total of nine runs. Fellow sophomore Brady Vogel pitched two innings and allowed two runs on two hits while junior Coy Eckroth pitched the last one-third inning before the game was ended on the ten run rule.

Williston 4, Dickinson 3

Williston scored two runs at the top of the first inning of play but would need the one run at the top of the seventh inning- and solid defense at the bottom of the seventh to win the game 4-3 over the Dickinson Midgets.

The Coyotes were 7-for-27 at the plate and had two errors as a team. Junior Chase Collings pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits in the game. He walked two batters and recorded eight strikeouts. Sophomore Justin Irgens was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI in the game.

Dickinson senior Jeremiah Jilek pitched six innings and allowed three runs on six hits with an earned run mark of two runs. He walked two batters and had five strikeouts in the game. Junior Jack Price pitched one inning and allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts and walked two batters. Senior Jace Kovash, Price, Jilek, senior Colin Tschetter and junior Will Easum each had a hit for the Midgets.

Mandan 11, Bismarck Century 6

Mandan took an early 3-1 lead after one inning of play and never trailed in the 11-6 win over Bismarck Century Patriots.

Senior Jamison Nelson pitched five innings for the Braves and allowed five runs on six hits for an earned run mark of four runs in the game. Senior Mason Oster pitched two innings and allowed one run on one hit in relief. As a team, Mandan was 12-for-32 at the plate. Senior Tukker Horner and junior Marcus Bird Horse were both 3-for-4 batting and senior Dylan Gierke was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.

Junior Aiden Johnson pitched five innings for the Patriots and allowed seven runs on eight hits with an earned run record of three runs. Senior Jason Juma pitched two innings and allowed four runs on four hits with an earned run mark of two runs. Senior Ben LaDuke was 2-for-3 at the plate while junior Charlie VIg was 2-for-4 batting. As a team, Century was 7-for-25 in the game.
