Sentinels launch past Wolves in softball doubleheader

WATFORD CITY – Minot North’s offense took off against the Watford City Wolves in softball action, sweeping the doubleheader, 21-8 and 12-7.

Watford City struck first, when Sam Chavez scored on a Jordyn Pederson single. It was the Wolves only lead.

The Sentinels answered with a nine-run second inning. Tiecyn Hertz stealing home to give Minot North the lead. Hertz also hit a two-run double in the inning to expand the Sentinels lead to 7-1, before coming around to score herself on an error by the Watford City pitcher.

Minot North added four runs in the third, six in the fourth and two in the fifth inning in the win. The Wolves showed fight in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs, but it wasn’t enough to extend the game.

Eliese McCann scored four runs on one hit, a triple, while Hertz, Aven Kelly and Kate Coleman all finished with three runs in the game. Other Sentinels who scored multiple runs included Kinsey Welstad, Cadey Shipman, Mylee Ackerman and Hailey Holte.

Chavez led the Wolves’ offensively, going 3-for-3 at the plate and scoring three runs on three hits.

Hertz pitched a complete game for Minot North, giving up eight runs, five earned, on seven hits, while striking out four and walking two.

The Sentinels finished with 14 stolen bases in game one.

Minot North got another complete game in game two of the doubleheader. This time, it was Welstad, who held Watford City to seven runs, as the Sentinels defeated the Wolves 12-7.

Welstad finished with five strikeouts and gave up three walks in the win.

Minot North wasted little time taking control of the game, scoring three runs in both the first and second innings to take a 6-1 lead. After a scoreless third inning, Minot North added two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings for the win. Watford City was down 11-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but was able to close out the game with five runs in the final two innings to keep it competitive.

Welstad scored three runs on four hits, and also had an RBI to lead Minot North. Ackerman, Kelly and Mya Bagwell each scored twice for the Sentinels. Other scorers included Coleman, Hertz and Aubree Braaten.

A. Schaff scored two runs on one hit to lead Watford City. H. Jacobson and Pederson each hit doubles for the Wolves.

Minot North improves to 5-6-1 overall, and will host Bismarck Legacy in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 18. First pitch in the opening game is slated for 4:30 p.m.
