Minot North wins first game in program history at Battle in the Bubble

Three games in program history.

A win. A loss. A tie.

Minot North’s softball program has done it all in remarkable quick fashioning, and they saved the best for last. On Friday, the Sentinels picked up the first win in program history with a 13-8 win over the Grand Forks Knights.

Minot North needed its rally caps to make history, as the Sentinels trailed 8-3 after five-and-a-half innings. However, Minot North scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on three more in the bottom of the sixth for the win.

Both Cadence Shipman and Aven Kelly scored three runs apiece, and Kinzy Welstad had three stolen bases to help lead the Sentinels. Welstad scored two runs in the game, as did Tiecyn Hertz, who hit two doubles.

Welsted through a complete game for the Sentinels, giving up eight runs on twelve hits while striking out three batters and walking one.

GF Central 14, Minot North 13

Coming off the first varsity win in program history in the opener, the Minot North Sentinels jumped out to an early five run lead in the first inning, before adding five more in the second to take a 10-4 lead over the visiting Grand Forks Central Knights.

However, the Knights scored eight runs in the top of the third and added two more in the fourth to defeat the Sentinels 14-13 on Friday afternoon.

Minot North got the scoring started in the first inning, when Cadence Shipman doubled to center field, scoring Kinzy Welstad and Aven Kelly. Mya Bagwell scored on a double by Eliese McCann and Aubree Braaten added a run on a scoring error, as the Sentinels jumped out to an early five run lead.

Grand Forks Central responded by scoring four runs in the top of the second, and the Sentinels added 5 more in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-4 lead into the third.

Then, the Knights’ bats came alive, scoring eight runs in the inning. After the Sentinels took back the lead in the bottom half on three runs, Grand Forks Central rallied for two runs in the fourth to hold on for the win.

The loss drops Minot North to 1-2-1 on the season. On Monday, April 8, the Sentinels host Turtle Mountain Community at the South Hill Complex, with first pitch at 4:30 p.m.

Minot High was also at the Battle in the Bubble and recorded a split against Grand Forks Red River. The Majettes shutout the Roughriders 11-0 in the first game behind four shutout innings from Halle Baker, in which she only gave up two hits. Raegan Terrel came on in relief and pitched one inning of no-hit ball for Minot High.

After four games, the Majettes sit at 3-1 on the season. They will travel to Williston for a doubleheader on Monday.
