Beavers’ softball picks up weekend sweep

The Minot State University women’s softball team was a perfect 4-0 on the weekend, sweeping doubleheaders against Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State to remain in a tie for third-place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) standings.

With the wins, Minot State now sits at 22-15 overall and 17-7 in conference and are currently on a four-game winning streak.

Minot State 8, Minnesota Crookston 1

Reegan Floyd (7-7) only allowed one run in seven innings on the mound, as the Beavers cruised past the Golden Eagles 8-1 to open the weekend.

Minot State opened up a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and never looked back, scoring a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth in the win. Minnesota Crookston picked up its lone run in the third inning when Whitnee Curry doubled to left to score Paige Schwaluk.

Sydney Eggers picked up the loss for the Golden Eagles, allowing two earned runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings of play. Evie Stuck came on in relief and gave up four runs, one earned, on four hits, while walking three and striking out two in 3 1/3 innings of work, while Kailee Pollard closed out the game by allowing two runs on two hits in one inning of relief.

Four Beavers had doubles in the game: Abby Lohse, Anna LaCount, Taryn Bennett and Hannah Murray. Lauryn DeGuzman led the Minot State scoring effort with two runs on one hit and a walk, while Brooklyn Morrison, Lohse, Gabi Dawyduk, Kilee Fehd, Bennett and Murray all scored. DeGuzman and Dawyduk each stole a base for the Beavers.

Minot State 6, Minnesota Crookston 3

In the second game of the doubleheader, it was Dawyduk’s turn to pitch a complete game, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out eight to pick up her eighth win of the season for the Beavers.

Minot State opened up a 6-0 lead after four innings, before Minnesota Crookston scored three in the top of the fifth, as the Beavers held on for the 6-3 win.

Like the first game, the Beavers had four doubles in the game with LaCount, Dawyduk, Bennet and Murray all recording one. Morrison and LaCount each scored multiple runs for the Beavers, with Lexi Barduson and Dawyduk each adding a run in the win.

The Beavers jumped on Thayda Houser (5-12), the Minnesota Crookston pitcher, scoring six runs on nine hits in four innings of work. Alexa Guilford pitched two innings of shutout relief work for the Golden Eagles, allowing just one hit while striking out one.

Bemidji State 1

It was a battle of the Beavers on Sunday, and Minot State’s proved dominant at the South Hill Complex, as Floyd allowed just one run in six innings in the 5-1 win. It was Floyd’s eighth win of the season, as she got back above .500 for the season. Kierra Fournier pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Beavers.

Bemidji State scored its lone run in the first inning when Molly Houts singled up the middle to drive in Alexa Christienson. Minot State responded with a run in the second before erupting for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win.

The previous two games saw Minot State finish with four doubles, but that wasn’t enough for the peace garden Beavers, as they added one more to the mix in Sunday’s first game to finish with five. DeGuzman, Morrison, Dawyduk, Paige Kellog and Sara Van Wickler all hit a two-bagger as Morrison added a triple to go along with hers.

Dawyduk scored two runs to lead Minot State while DeGuzman, Morrison and Lohse all added runs in the win.

Bemidji State 0

The bats went silent in the second game of the doubleheader on Sunday, as Minot State defeated visiting Bemidji State 1-0 in a pitching duel.

Both Minot State’s Dawyduk and Bemidji State’s Danica Sarff pitched complete games for their teams. Dawyduk (9-6) pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and zero walks while striking out two. Bemidji State grounded out 14 teams in the game. Sarff (2-10) allowed one run on three hits in six innings while walking four and striking out seven.

Minot State’s lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kellog doubled to center field to score Taylor Eatherton, who was pinch-running for LaCount. Morrison recorded a stolen base in the win.

Minot State will close out the regular season next weekend with doubleheaders against the University of Minnesota Duluth, on Saturday. April 27 and St. Cloud State University, on Sunday, April 28.

Minot State honored its senior class on Sunday.
