MSU trio selected for All-Tournament team

Makena Welby
Haylie Biever
Aspen Cooper

Following a fantastic run at the ACHA Women’s Division I National Tournament last week, a trio of Minot State players were honored for their performance on the ice on Thursday by the ACHA.

Minot State goalie Haylie Biever, defenseman Aspen Cooper, and forward Makena Welby all were named to the ACHA All-Tournament First Team as they helped lead the Beavers to the national championship game for the second straight year.

Biever played in all four of Minot State’s games in goal, picking up three straight wins to back-stop the Beavers to runner-up national champion honors. She made 160 saves on 167 shots and stopped a penalty-shot chance in the tournament. Biever also set a new single-game Minot State record of 70 saves in a 2-1, double-overtime victory in the semifinals over No. 1 ranked Liberty, ending the Flames run of five consecutive national titles.

Cooper helped anchor a defense in front of Biever that allowed just 7 goals in the tournament, and she added the opening goal of the tournament for the Beavers, scoring the first goal of Minot State’s 3-2 overtime win over Michigan in the teams’ first-round game.

Welby sparked the offense as she had a pair of goals, both in Minot State’s dramatic opening win as she tied the game with one second remaining against Michigan, then scored the overtime game-winner for the Beavers.
