Mustangs clip Cardinals in physical contest

SURREY – The Surrey Mustangs fended off the Nedrose Cardinals during their home opener on Tuesday, 70-59, in front of a raucous crowd.

The game was physical with both teams pressing the entire game and that pressure led to a number of turnovers, in what was at times a sloppy, early season game for both teams.

Surrey opened the game with a 7-0 lead, before Nedrose clawed their way back, and that’s how much of the first half went, with the Mustangs building a sizeable advantage, only to have the Cardinals come back. However, Surrey used a 22-14 edge in the third quarter to pull away for good.

Surrey head boys basketball coach Robyn Vollmer wasn’t that worried with the streaky play early on.

“We press the entire game, and it’s exhausting,” Vollmer said. “So there are going to be moments where they’re tired, and they need a little break or breather. And then there are going to be those moments when they have to understand, ‘I have to keep up; I have to keep going, or else the other team is going to go on a run.'”

Nedrose did outscore Surrey 15-13 in the fourth, but they were never able to get a serious rally going in the quarter.

Surrey saw four players reach double figures. Colin Vollmer led the Mustangs with 17 points; Lucas Vollmer scored 15; Ethan Amundson had 14 and Logan Vollmer had 10.

“Amundson ran the floor really well tonight,” R. Vollmer said. “He’s our big guy, and it’s tough to get up and down the floor, and he was always the first one down on the floor every time. I thought that was pretty amazing.”

Nedrose’s Jodey Myers led all scorers with 18 points, and his teammates Brayden Heigh and Kaleb Eggen each finish in double figures with twelve points.

Next up for Surrey (1-0) is an away game at Drake-Anamoose on Thursday, Dec. 14, while Nedrose (0-1) hosts Westhope-Newburg in its home opener on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Starting at $2.99/week.
