Minot North sets school record at Williston invite

WILLISTON — Both Minot high schools’ girls golf teams traveled west today to compete in the Williston Coyotes Invite. One of them came home with a pair of school records.

Minot North’s Kinzy Welstad carded an 83. Her sixth-place finish paced the Sentinels to a 361 team score. The score is the lowest in the young school’s history, as is the squad’s third-place finish.

“The girls really competed today. They did a nice job of eliminating the triples and bigger today,” said Minot North head coach Michael DeLorme. If we can keep that up we’re going to have a good year and continue to see some success.”

Emersyn Kopp shot an 85 to finish in ninth. Ally Larson also had quite a day at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course, as her 94 marked the first time she has broken 100.

“It was fun to to finally get over the hump and break 100,” said Larson. “Being able to contribute to the team score and getting four counting scores under 100 is a big accomplishment. I’m proud of the team for the strong finish today.”

Carlie Brown had a 99, Katleyn Bast shot a 102 and Abigail Speer had a 118 to round out the Sentinel’s scoring.

Mandan won the event with a score of 323. Once again, the Braves were paced by standout Anna Huettl, who turned in a 77 to take medalist honors. Her teammates Brittyn Mettler and Ruby Heydt carded 81s to finish in a third place.

St. Mary’s had two girls in the top five. Abigail Schneider finished second with a 79. Teammate Lola Huber placed fifth with an 82.

A trio of Bismarck schools joined Mandan and Minot North in the top five. St. Mary’s were runners-up with a 340. Legacy’s 365 was good enough for fourth place, four shots back of Minot North. Century finished fifth with a 370.

One shot out of the top five was Minot High. The Majettes shot a 371 to put them in sixth. Morgan Strange bounced back with an 87 to lead all Minot High scorers with a tenth-place finish. Adison Dittus finished in a four-way tie for 15th place with an 88.

Other scores for the Majettes included Taylor DesLauriers (96), Samantha Lentz (100) and Mia Osborne (124).

Both squads will travel to Heart River Golf Course in Dickinson on Monday Aug. 21. The Invitational will see tee times begin at 12 p.m.
