Golfers begin season at Watford City

WATFORD CITY – High school golfers kicked off their seasons yesterday, as both the Minot High and Minot North girls’ teams traveled to the Watford City Invite.

Despite the mild weather, the golfers spent much of the day battling heavy winds.

Minot High placed fourth with a team score of 373. Minot North finished in seventh place, posting a 385.

“The wind sort of stunned us at first,” said Minot High coach Scott Foltz. “The golfers settled in though and five of them scored much better on the second nine.”

Scoring for Minot High were senior Adison Dittus, 90; senior Morgan Strange, 91; sophomore Katie Thomas, 95; freshman Taylor DesLauriers, 97; senior Cali Wilson, 98; junior Samantha Lentz, 102.

“Hopefully, after today we will come out of the gates faster and shoot some lower scores. Our team is mature and knows how to deal with adversity,” said Foltz.

The Majettes also saw three players compete at the junior varsity level. Junior Mialee Osborne shot a 112, while freshman Kenadee Burud and sophomore Maura Alexander shot 114 and 115 respectively.

The windy conditions weren’t enough to keep Minot North from besting each of their tournament scores from a year ago.

Leading the way for the Sentinels was sophomore Emersyn Kopp, who shot an 88. Sophomore Kinzy Welstad shot a 94, junior Carlie Brown posted a 99 and sophomore Ally Larson rounded out the team scoring with a 104. Sophomore Abigail Speer carded a 108 and eight-grader Katelyn Bast posted a 117.

“The girls played well on a rough, windy day,” said Michael Delorme. “We had a bit of a rough finish and still managed to shoot a lower team score than any event last year. Good things are ahead for us.”

Mandan senior Anna Huettl took medalist honors with a 78. The Braves finished with a team score of 334 to win first-place, finishing 26 strokes ahead of second place St. Mary’s (360).

Jamestown (367) finished third. Century and Legacy tied for fifth with each team carding a 378. Dickinson (390), Watford City (399), Williston (411) and Bismarck High (485) rounded out the scoring.
