Demolition derby champions crowned

Adam Papin/MDN Cars get tangled up during the demolition derby on Monday night at the North Dakota State Fair.

The sights and sounds of cars ramming into each other at full speed filled the grandstands at the North Dakota State Fair last night, as a number of drivers competed for a $1,000 purse at the demolition derby.

Ten cars made it into the main feature with one goal in mind: to be the last one standing when all the other cars could no longer run. In the end a half dozen cars got into a group of disabled vehicles before a red flag would reset things with the No. 4 car, driven by Jamie Kegly , still moving. Garren Counts, in the No. 33 car, spun his wheels trying to get started again, as did Jackson Bernstein in the No. 9 car.

Ultimately, Kegly prevailed as the winner. However, there was some confusion about who finished in places second through fourth during the event. After about a forty-five-minute delay, it was determined by organizers that they would do a restart of the cars in contention to decide those the final few places.

After the resumption of the derby, Counts finished second and Amyotte third. Ty Hanson won the Mad Dog award in the main feature.

In the compacts division, Tyler Getzlaff took home first place. Alyssa Monson and Ron Neibaurer finished second and third, respectively. Getzlaff won the Mad Dog award for the most crowd-pleasing hit.

Mitchell Bettenhausen, of Glennallen, took home the van feature by outlasting some friends in the process.

“I was out there with a few friends, so you know, having one up on them always means a lot,” said Bettenhausen. “It’s more of a bragging rights thing for me, but also I’m ultimately out there to just have a lot of fun.”

Bettenhausen acknowledged that the vans are made to go forward much, and that he was in survival mode for a good portion of the derby. He outlasted Scott Nauman, who finished second. Brady Wolf finished third and was also the Mad Dog winner in the vans division.
