Minot golf one of few to improve in final round of state tournament

Adam Papin/MDN Minot’s Kasen Rostad, shown here in this file photo, competed this week at the NDHSAA Class A State Golf Tournament in Dickinson, alongside his Magi teammates.

DICKINSON – Minot eliminated many of the bad holes that plagued them in round one to finish as one of only four teams to improve their scores on the final day of the NDHSAA Class A Boys Golf State Tournament.

Among the low four golfers whose scores counted, Minot carded three opening-round triple-bogeys and one quintuple-bogey. However, in round two, they didn’t record a single score worse than a double bogey.

Led by senior Brock Jones’ 5-over 77, Minot shot a team score of 316, the fourth lowest score on the day. Kasen Rostad improved by four strokes, carding a 6-over 78. Tyler Bast was eight strokes better in the second round, coming in with a 79. Parker Argent’s 84 was four shots better than his opening 88.

Bennett Bartsch regressed slightly with an 82; however, combined with his opening round 1-over 73, his 155 total was good enough to tie for 12th place to lead the Magi in scoring.

Easton Bradley added a 98 for Minot.

Minot North’s Walter Langhans finished tied for 69th place, after shooting a 91 on Wednesday.

Fueled by four of the lowest six scores in the tournament, West Fargo Sheyenne Mustangs took the team title with a score of 579. That was 28 strokes better than runner-up Grand Forks Red River, who finished the event with a 607.

Sheyenne’s Nate Peyerl took medalist honors after shooting back-to-back rounds under par. On Tuesday, the Mustang senior opened with a 3-under 69, and yesterday he shot a 2-under 70 to finish with a combined 5-under 139.

Zach Skarperud, a junior at Fargo Shanley, was state runner-up with an even-par 144 for the week. Sheyenne’s Andrew Whilhelm (145), Red River’s Carson Skarperud (145), Sheyenne’s Aiden Knodel (146) rounded out the top five.

With Brock Jones as the lone Minot senior, and no juniors on the roster, the Magi will look to return to the state tournament next year with more experience and hoping to build off this year’s success to perform even stronger.
