Local golfers begin two-day event at Class B state tourney

WAHPETON – Bois De Sioux Golf Course was the host of a big two-day event that began on Tuesday, as Class B boys’ golfers hit the links to compete in the 2023 Class B Boys State Golf Tournament.

Starting on Tuesday and running until the end of today, golfers prepared all year long to hopefully play their best rounds during this time.

Regardless of the results, qualifying for state and being surrounded by some of the best talent the sport has to offer in North Dakota is a big accomplishment on its own.

At the end of day one, a variety of Class B teams and individuals set themselves up to be in a position to remain competitive on the final day of the tournament.

Central Cass led the way in the team standings, posting a score of 315. Oak Grove (327), Kindred (328), Shiloh Christian (329), Dickinson Trinity (333), Bottineau (333), Grafton (344), Beulah (346), Lisbon (347), and North Border (358) made up the top ten after Central Cass.

Aidan Hall of Northern Cass and Zachary St. Aubin of South Border were the top two individual finishers on Tuesday, as they both shot a 71 to remain ahead of the rest of the pack.

Bottineau’s team score of 333 put them in a tie for fifth and ranked them the highest among local teams. In addition to Getzlaff and Palmer, Alex Lorenz shot an 86, Connor Radtke shot a 91, Nicholas Barbot shot a 93, and Breckin Bohl shot a 93.

The Rugby Panthers finished with a score of 364, which was good for 11th overall heading into today’s action. Leading the Panthers was Bailey Zachmeier’s score of 89, Jackson Brossart with a 91, Kiefer Fritz with a 91, Bryce Zietz with a 93, Bryce Jacobs with a 94, and Lucas Wentz with a 101.

As a team, the Our Redeemer’s Knights scored a 381 on Tuesday to rank themselves 16th overall. Bryce Vibeto shot an 89 to lead the team, followed by Ashton Roedocker who shot a 95, Oliver Thompson who shot a 97, Collin Swenson who shot a 100, Payten Lindbo who shot a 102, and Ethan Brown who shot a 114.

The Des Lacs-Burlington Lakers’ team score of 381 placed them 17th overall. John Renaud led all Lakers with an 87, followed by Eli Miller who shot an 88, Zane Bjerklie who shot a 101, Carter Eide who shot a 105, Kaiden Vigen who shot a 110, and Shad Wahus who shot a 112.

Sophomore Jett Lundeen of Bishop Ryan was the lone Lion competing at state, so they did not place as a team, however, Lundeen’s score of 84 placed him 38th among individual golfers.

Senior Gage Olson of South Prairie competed individually as well. Olson shot an 87 to be in a tie for 49th overall.

Like Lundeen and Olson, senior Ethan Hanson of Nedrose competed individually and shot an 88, making Hanson tied for 53rd overall.

Today will be the final day of the 2023 Class B Boys Golf State Tournament, which will have golfers teeing off in the morning as they look to keep competing for the state crown.
