Majettes continue marvelous start, sweep Legacy
Sean Williams/MDN Taury Hight (23) of Minot High softball celebrates at third base during a game against the Legacy Sabers on Tuesday night.
2023 has been very kind to the Minot High softball team, as they enter the week with an unblemished record. On Tuesday night, the Majettes (10-0 overall, 5-0 West Region) hosted the Legacy Sabers (3-5 overall, 2-1 West Region) at South Hill Complex for Pink Night.
Donning pink uniforms for the night, the Majettes and Sabers hit the field where the Majettes looked to continue their winning ways as they matched up with a West Region foe for a doubleheader.
The Majettes succeeded in keeping their record unblemished, as they swept the Sabers by finals of 23-0 and 13-3 behind another big day at the plate and a complete team effort.
Picking up where they left off, the Majettes brought the bats out in game one and were able to put 20 runs on the board for the second consecutive game. Ready to make an immediate impact, the Majettes plated 11 runs in the bottom of the first.
After an RBI groundout from Kinsey Fjeld and a sacrifice fly from Avery Lunde gave the Majettes a 2-0 lead with two outs in the first, Minot rallied to have 11 consecutive batters reach base in the frame.
Tayler Falcon helped the bats get off to a booming start, by hitting an inside the park home run and a two-run triple in the inning. An RBI double from Isabelle Anderson and RBI singles from Kirsten Galloway, Ellington Anderson, Cierra Erickson and Lunde highlighted the rest of the scoring for Minot, as they grabbed a comfortable 11-0 lead after the first inning.
Not stopping there, however, the Majettes added nine more runs in the bottom of the second to make sure they continued their winning ways. E. Anderson, Galloway and Jillian Ackerman singled, Erickson, I. Anderson and Taury Hight doubled, and Lunde grounded out to bring runs home and make it a 20-0 Majettes’ lead.
Minot went on to add three more runs in the contest to take game one by a final of 23-0. Not only did Galloway make an impact at the plate, but she also made an impact on the mound as the starting pitcher.
Galloway tossed three innings while allowing no runs on four hits, two walks and piled up five strikeouts. Sydnee Bartch chipped in on the shutout as well by finishing off the game with two scoreless innings and only allowing one hit and two walks, while picking up one strikeout.
In an opening game that saw every single member of Minot’s starting lineup record at least one hit and one RBI, it was truly a dominant performance from start to finish for the team.
Falcon led the way by going 4-for-4 with a triple, home run, walk and three RBI, followed by Erickson who went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI, Fjeld who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and three RBI, and Hight who went 3-for-3 with a double, triple, walk and two RBI.
The Sabers took their first lead of the day to begin game two, as they scored three in the top of the first before Minot had a chance to bat. Once it was Minot’s turn to step up to the plate, the Sabers’ lead quickly vanished.
After loading the bases without recording an out, Lunde drove in the first run of game two for the Majettes on a single. Fjeld and Falcon scored on a passed ball, plus Erickson singled home a run and all of a sudden, Minot grabbed a 5-3 lead after the first.
Once the Majettes took the lead, they never looked back as they remained in control the rest of the way. After tacking on two more runs, the Majettes proceeded to match their first-inning production by putting five runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth.
A triple and steal of home by Fjeld, a Falcon RBI single, RBI triple from Halle Baker and a groundout from Ackerman brought the runs in during the rally. Lunde ended the game for good in the following inning, as the Majettes earned a sweep with a 13-3 victory over the Sabers.
Falcon started and went the distance for Minot. After being hit around a little bit in the first inning, Falcon settled in and kept her team in a great position to get another win. Falcon finished the day tossing five innings while allowing three runs on 10 hits, three walks and had no strikeouts.
Lunde went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI, Baker went 1-for-2 with a triple, walk and two RBI, Erickson went 1-for-2 with a triple, and I. Anderson went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead Minot in game two.
Minot High will hit the road for the next action, which is scheduled for Friday. The Majettes will take part in a varsity Jamboree at Dickinson High school with play starting at 10 a.m. that morning.
