No. 1 Beaver hockey team hosts Waldorf Thursday

The top-ranked Beavers rolled through a busy weekend and now look to keep things rolling with a rare mid-week game as Minot State hosts Waldorf on Thursday at the Maysa Arena.

The Beavers (24-1-0 overall) will be facing the Warriors (9-12-2) for the first time, but both have faced similar competition this season as Waldorf has played Jamestown, the University of Mary, and Dakota College of Bottineau – the most recent teams to fall to Minot State.

The Warriors are 0-4 against the Marauders, 0-2 against the Jimmies, but do have a pair of wins over the Jacks.

Sophomore forward Tyler Nelson leads Waldorf in scoring and in total points with 12 goals and 21 assists for 33 points, while senior forward Zac Jimenez has 10 goals, and senior forward Wade Auger and junior defenseman Michael Heitkamp have been top playmakers with 15 and 11 assists, respectively, along with 7 goals each.

As for the Beavers, they are led by seven different double-digit goal scorers with Carter Barley leading the way with 18 goals, along with 29 assists, while Joey Moffatt adds 16 goals and 22 assists, and Landyn Cochrane has 15 goals and 16 assists.

Jay Buchholz also has 11 goals and 20 assists, Sheldin Howard and Drew Carter each have 13 goals and 16 assists, and Reid Arnold has 10 goals and 12 assists for a potent Beavers offense.

That makes things easier on the Beavers top goaltending duo of Jake Anthony, who has 16 wins and 3 shutouts along with a 1.38 GAA and .940 save percentage, and Riley Wallace who has 7 wins, a 1.27 GAA, and a .931 save percentage.

Thursday’s home contest is the last home game for three weeks as the Beavers play at Ohio next weekend in a rematch against the Bobcats who eliminated Minot State from Nationals last spring, then at Dakota College of Bottineau and at Mary before returning to the Maysa Arena on Sunday, Feb. 19, to host Jamestown.
