NDSU incoming freshman selected in MLB Draft

As part of All-Star week festivities, the 2022 MLB Draft is underway in Los Angeles, Calif. with day two of the three-day process wrapping up on Monday.

Jonah Tong, an incoming freshman committed to play at North Dakota State, heard his name called on Monday, as the New York Mets selected Tong in the seventh round at pick No. 209.

A Markham, Ontario native, Tong’s repertoire consists of a fastball, curveball, and changeup. His fastball tops out at 90 mph, while his curveball and changeup come in at the high 70’s range, according to Prep Baseball Report.

Most recently, Tong spent time playing for the Frederick Keys of the MLB Draft League where he appeared in four games and made three starts. During his time with the Keys, Tong tossed 11.2 innings while allowing 14 hits, 10 walks, and 14 strikeouts.

With Monday’s selection, Tong is the first player to get drafted with an affiliation to NDSU since Bennett Hostetler went to the Miami Marlins in the eighteenth round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

Through their first ten picks in the draft, the Mets selected six pitchers. Tong, however, is the only one of the group coming from the high school ranks. He will now have a decision to make as to whether he will honor his NDSU commitment or begin his professional career with the Mets.
