Vistas bats boost team to victory

Weather wipes game two of double header

James Jackson/MDN The Minot Vistas celebrate at the plate, putting a total of 10 runs on the board in game one of a double header at Corbett Field on Monday night.

Coming off a split doubleheader with Minnesota Moorhead which saw the Minot Vistas earn a 4-3 victory in game one, followed by a 10-6 loss in game two, the Vistas were back in action on Monday night as they hosted the Williston Keybirds for a double header at Corbett Field.

The Vistas used a strong offensive showing to be on the winning end of a 10-run game this time, as they topped the Keybirds 10-7 in game one. They would show similar signs of a strong showing in game two, but weather washed away a chance for the Vistas to sweep the doubleheader.

Right-hander Tyler Buchanan took the mound for the Vistas in the first game and got two quick outs to start his day. Buchanan would then run into some trouble after loading the bases but got a flyout to escape the jam and hold the Keybirds scoreless in the first frame.

The Vistas put together a threat of their own, however, theirs would be more successful as they were able to put three runs on the board in the bottom half of the first inning.

Hunter Horner got the party started for the Vistas with a walk and advancing to third on a single courtesy of Kellan Burke. Horner would score on a wild pitch and Parker Hann would bring home two runs on a triple, giving the Vistas an early 3-0 lead.

Three runs would not be enough to satisfy the Vistas, as their bats proved to be more scorching than the outside temperature by piling on four more runs in bottom of the second to claim a 7-0 lead.

Horner, once again, found himself as a cog in the driving force of a Vistas offensive burst with an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Jonas Bubach and Parker Hann chipped in as well with an RBI double each in the frame.

Even though Williston’s hopes were washing away early, they showed resiliency by climbing their way back into this one. The Keybirds mustered three run innings in both the third and the fourth innings, making it a one run ballgame at 7-6.

The one run lead is as close as the Keybirds would bring the game within, as the Vistas managed to add one run in each of the next three innings to make it a double-digit day in game one.

Highlighting the final push for the Vistas was Parker Hann who had another RBI and Morgan Nygaard who drove in a run of his own on a single. It was a strong showing at the plate for the Vistas, who used 13 hits to score 10 runs and came away with a 10-7 victory in game one.

In a similar fashion, Landon Halseth ran into trouble on the mound to start the second game. The Keybirds put two runners on with one out, but Halseth settled in, striking out the next two hitters to get out of the jam unscathed.

The script would continue a similar pattern in the bottom half of the first, only this time the Vistas’ first punch wasn’t quite as powerful. Morgan Nygaard singled to start the frame, followed by walks for Tyler Buchanan and Mason Zeitz. Nygaard would score on a passed ball, giving the Vistas an early lead once again at 1-0.

Unfortunately, inclement weather would limit the damage the Vistas could do in game two, as the game was postponed and will be continued at a later date. The second game ended after the first inning, with the Vistas holding a 1-0 lead

The Vistas will be back in action on Thursday, with the Justin Demary Memorial Tournament taking place at Corbett Field. The tournament will run from Thursday through Sunday.
