MSU wins ‘Battle of the Beavers’

Sweeps doubleheader against Bemidji State

The Minot State pitchers set the tone in the circle for a dominating day in the “Battle of the Beavers” as Trinity Valentine and Jasmine Blizzard each threw complete-game wins for Minot State, which swept Bemidji State 8-0 in six innings and 5-1 in an NSIC doubleheader in the MSU Bubble on Wednesday.

Valentine struck out four and scattered just three hits to earn her 11th win of the season while Blizzard finished off the sweep with seven Ks in her fourth victory of the spring.

Lenora Watson and Jazmin Karununga each collected five hits apiece in the twinbill to lead the Minot State offensive attack.

Game 1

Minot State 8, Bemidji State 0

Senior Trinity Valentine was dealing on Wednesday, throwing a three-hit shutout to lead the Minot State Beavers past the Bemidji State Beavers 8-0 in six innigs.

Valentine (11-5) went the distance for Minot State (24-8 overall, 5-3 NSIC), giving up three hits, walking two and striking out four.

Junior Jamie Odlum led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double and two RBIs. Junior Lenora Watson compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 3-for-3 with a triple. Junior Jazmin Karununga also helped out, going 3-for-3 for Minot State with two RBIs.

How it happened

The Beavers took the lead for good in the second, scoring for the first time in the inning. Minot State got an RBI single from Karununga, scoring sophomore Brooklyn Morrison from third base.

The Beavers then tacked on runs in four more innings, with their biggest output coming in the fourth when they scored three times. An RBI base knock from junior Jaycie Rostad was the big hit in the three-run frame.

Game 2

Minot State 5, Bemidji State 1

The Minot State Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 5-1 victory against the Bemidji State Beavers on Wednesday.

Sophomore Jasmine Blizzard (4-1) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing three walks and striking out seven.

At the plate, the Beavers were paced by junior Kilee Fehd, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double and an RBI. Junior Kiera Shwaluk furnished a noteworthy performance as well, going 3-for-4. Junior Jamie Odlum also helped out for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a triple.

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Minot State got an RBI single from sophomore Brooklyn Morrison, scoring Fehd from first base.

How it happened

The Beavers then held the Bemidji State Beavers scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Minot State pushed across a run on junior Zoya Robbins’ two-out RBI double, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Beavers.

Minot State kept Bemidji State scoreless before building their lead to 5-0 the following inning. The Beavers put up a three spot, highlighted by a run-scoring double off the bat of Fehd. Bemidji State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still coasted to the 5-1 win.
