Bishop Ryan boys rout Glenburn 64-26

Lions advance to District 12 semifinals

Ryan Ladika/MDN Brady Feller, right, notched nine points for the Lions in Ryan’s Friday win over Glenburn.

Bolstered by a quick start on the offensive end, the top-seeded Bishop Ryan Catholic School Lions kicked off a four-day District 12 boys’ basketball tournament slate with a convincing 64-26 victory over the No. 8 Glenburn Panthers at the Minot Auditorium Friday afternoon.

The victory completed the season sweep of the Panthers following the Lions’ 37-point win over Glenburn Jan. 25 and sent Ryan to the District 12 semifinals for a meeting with Our Redeemer’s Christian School Saturday night.

“Sometimes you play an eight seed and you think you’re just going to lock in and the other team is going to roll over,” Ryan head coach Broderick Bosch said. “I like that we respected our opponents enough to know that wasn’t going to happen, so we had to work hard.”

Led by junior forward Ian Johnson, the Lions began their first tournament action in dominant fashion. Johnson scored seven of Ryan’s first 10 points, highlighted by his first 3-point shot of the afternoon after Brady Feller kicked off the day with a triple of his own.

Jett Lundeen would record the Lions’ third 3-point shot of the first frame to help push Ryan’s lead to 17-6 after the first eight minutes. Ryan’s defense limited the Panthers to just three field goals in the first quarter, courtesy of Dylan McDonald, Luke Anderson and Devin Heinze.

Ryan’s offense only increased in a second quarter that saw the Lions outscore Glenburn 19-10. Anderson and Preston Peters added a combined three more points for Glenburn before Ryan rattled off a 17-2 stretch. Johnson added seven points during that span, including his second make from beyond the arc, and Feller registered four more.

“I thought we did a great job of pushing the ball today, and that’s one thing we wanted to work on, along with boxing out a little better,” Bosch continued. “I thought we did a little better than we normally do, but we still have to pick that up.”

Aidyn Derr found paydirt from deep with 1:29 to play in the first half, marking the Panthers’ first 3-point shot of the day, to stop the Lions’ run. After Heinze notched his second field goal of the game, though, Johnson responded with two more points to break the Lions’ lead open to 36-16 at halftime.

Firmly in command of the affairs coming out of the locker room, the Lions yielded just five second-half field goals and cruised through the final 16 minutes on the strength of 28 second-half points.

Johnson’s 21 points marked a game-high and Feller scored nine more for Ryan. Heinze reached double digits with 10 for Glenburn. The Panthers will play to continue their season Saturday at 3 p.m. in a loser-out region qualifying semifinal against South Prairie.

“I think it helps them getting those shots up and getting used to this bigger arena that we’re playing in,” Bosch said of the comfortable victory. “I think it will ease us into it, and we just have to be ready for tomorrow.”
