Nedrose beats Glenburn 3-1 on Senior Night

Robert Brewer/MDN Nedrose senior outside hitter Madison Hayes (5) looks to make a play on the ball during Tuesday night’s four-set victory over the Glenburn Panthers.

On Tuesday night, the Nedrose Cardinals closed out the 2021 regular season with its fifth straight win as they topped the Glenburn Panthers in four sets on Senior Night, 18-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-11.

In the first set, Nedrose got out to an initial lead, but Glenburn eventually took control thanks to consistent play at the net both offensively and defensively. With the score tied at 13, Glenburn won a long rally with multiple plays made by both teams to take a 14-13 lead over the Cardinals. From that point, the Panthers went on a 7-3 run to jump out ahead 21-16.

As the set continued, Glenburn senior outside hitter Hallie Matehs finessed a kill over the net to give the Panthers set point at 24-17. Soon after, an emphatic kill from fellow senior Lorelei McIver gave Glenburn a 25-18 set victory.

In the next set, Nedrose built a 13-7 lead largely due to improved offensive execution. The score was 13-9 when Nedrose senior Sophia Svystunova recorded a block at the net to allow the Cardinals to go up 14-9. Another block by Svystunova made the score 16-11 in favor of the Cardinals. Nedrose then went up 19-12 after a few miscues by the Panthers. However, Glenburn answered with a kill from McIver, which cut the Nedrose lead to 20-15. Later on, a Svystunova kill made it 23-17 as the Cardinals eventually went on to take the second set 25-18, evening up the match at a set apiece.

Glenburn started out the third set with a 3-0 advantage before Nedrose score its first point. Nedrose continued to rally and took an early 6-4 lead. The Panthers wrestled back the lead in a see-saw affair at 12-10 when a McIver kill gave visiting Glenburn a 13-10 edge.

The Panthers maintained an 18-13 lead and went up 20-16 after a kill by eighth grader Emma Jones. A few miscues from Glenburn allowed Nedrose to inch closer at 22-20. The Panther led at 23-22 when a Svystunova kill tied things up at 23. Nedrose took the lead at 24-23 but could not close out the set as a Glenburn point evened things up once again at 24-24. Nedrose had another set point opportunity at 25-24, but this time a Svystunova kill at the net gave the Cardinals the set in a thrilling 26-24 affair.

In the fourth set, Nedrose built an early 10-2 lead as they capitalized on Glenburn’s offensive struggles. An ace from junior Mariana Quezada made the score 11-2 in favor of the Cardinals. However, Glenburn cut into the lead at 13-8. Nedrose took the next three points to bump its lead to 16-8. The Cardinals led by as many as 13 down the stretch as they eventually closed out the set and the match at 25-11.

Up next on the volleyball schedule, both teams will be competing in their district postseason tournaments. While Nedrose will be participating in the District 11 tournament at Bottineau High, Glenburn will be playing in the District 12 tournament at the Minot Auditorium. Both districts will begin play on Thursday.
