Nedrose volleyball wins fourth straight over LCB 3-1

Robert Brewer/MDN Nedrose freshman setter Kenna Huff (4) looks to keep a rally alive in the first set of the Cardinals home contest against Lewis and Clark on Tuesday night. She led all players with 42 assists.

On Tuesday evening, the Nedrose Cardinals, extended their winning streak to four games as they defeated visiting Lewis and Clark-Berthold in four sets, 25-21, 25-27, 25-17, 26-24. Meanwhile, LCB’s losing streak now stands at four.

The first set was closely contested throughout. Lewis and Clark-Berthold had an initial lead early on, but Nedrose eventually relied on superior execution to maintain a lead. The Cardinals led by as many as three on multiple occasions midway through the opening set, but LCB found answers offensively to remain close.

The exploits of senior middle hitter Sophia Svystunova eventually started to turn the tide in favor of Nedrose. Active at the net both offensively and defensively, Svystunova was a key contributor down the stretch of the first set. The Cardinals took their biggest lead at 24-18 and eventually won the set by a tally of 25-21.

Svystunova continued her stellar play at the net early in the second set at Nedrose built an early 9-2 lead. However, LCB went on a 10-3 run from that point to make the score all even at 12-12. The remainder of the second set was a nip-and-tuck affair with neither side able to separate from one another on the scoreboard for an extended period of time.

The Cardinals eventually made it to set point at 24-22, but were unable to finish off a fiesty LCB squad. Nedrose also had another chance to put the set away at 25-24, but eventually fell to LCB 25-27, squaring up the match at a set apiece. From that point, Nedrose regained control of the match, taking the next two sets to close out the contest.

Svystunova concluded matters with a game-high 19 kills while teammate Madison Hayes chipped in with 12 for the Cardinals. Kaylie Gruber and Hayes also led the charge defensively with 19 digs and Kenna Huff added 42 assists in the victory. For LCB, Mya Neshem had a team-high 12 kills in defeat and Emily Wilson notched 32 digs. Natalie Helfrich posted 30 assists as well.

Up next, Nedrose plans to wrap up the regular season at home with a match against Glenburn on Oct. 26. Meanwhile, LCB plans to travel to Rugby for its regular season finale on Oct. 25. Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. start time.
