Majettes swim & dive team edged by Century 96-90

Ryan Ladika/MDN Minot High freshman Autumn Steckler competes in the first heat of the 200-yard freestyle during the Majettes’ Tuesday night meet against Bismarck Century.

The Minot High Majettes’ swim & dive team was expecting a challenge in their latest dual and the visiting Bismarck Century Patriots provided one, as the Majettes were edged in their Tuesday evening meet by Century by a 96-90 final score.

“We just had kids all over stepping up and filling in those gaps and making that point gap smaller,” Minot head coach Emily Jensen said. “Knowing that we can hang with (Century) and be close to them is a good confidence-booster for us, and we know that it’s going to be a fight all the way until the end.”

The girls have been holding special theme nights for each meet during the regular season as a morale-booster and a way to bring the team closer together, and Tuesday’s was ‘Neon Night’ at the Magic City Campus.

“Before meets, we’ve been having this thing where we go in the locker room and have a jam sesh, just hype each other up,” Junior Elise Altringer said. “We’ve been having little themes each meet, and it just brings our team together, and it’s really fun to see the team chemistry this year and just how close everyone is on the team.”

The energized Majettes began the evening on a high note, as the quartet of Ava Wiliamson, Altringer, Jordn Wolsky and Emily Brugman took the top spot in the 200-yard medley relay with a final time of 1:55.89.

“I see so much improvement. Every single day I watch these girls get better and work hard to achieve the end goal,” Wolsky added. “We did suffer defeat tonight, but I’m so proud of these girls and everything that they’ve improved.”

The Patriots countered with victories in the next two events, the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard IM. Sam Vonbokern, Caelin Flaten and Payton Luzardo each earned points for Minot in the 200 free with respective times of 2:07.25, 2:08.21 and 2:10.77, and Wolsky finished second in the IM at 2:18.40, just ahead of Brugman’s 2:23.71 mark.

Altringer put the Majettes back on top in the 50-yard freestyle, the fourth event of the evening, with a 25.69 finish, but Century would take the top spot in each of the remaining seven swimming events.

Brugman finished second in the 100-yard butterfly, the sixth event of the night, with a final time of 1:04.41, just ahead of Luzardo’s 1:04.97. Wiliamson and Vonbokern came in second and third in the 100-yard freestyle with respective times of 56.48 and 56.67, and Altringer finished just behind Century in the lengthy 500-yard freestyle with a final mark of 5:31.53.

The quartet of Wiliamson, Reese Goodman, Bostyn Edwards and Vonbokern claimed four more points in a second-place finish for Minot in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:45.32, and Wolsky finished second between two Patriots in the 100-yard backstroke with a 1:03.35 mark.

Wiliamson finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:11.99 final time, and the Majettes wrapped up the evening with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay when Altringer, Brugman, Vonbokern and Wolsky produced a 3:44.51 mark in the event.

On the diving board, Minot swept the top three spots, as Bella Price, Haley Conklin and Ella Kesler earned respective scores of 260.30, 245.40 and 217.00 in the one-meter diving event.

The Majettes’ next meet is scheduled for Oct. 26, when Minot will square off in Mandan in a dual against the Braves at 5 p.m.
