Minot overwhelms Jamestown 9-0 in regular season finale

The first-place Minot Magicians capped off their regular season with a convincing 9-0 victory over the Jamestown Blue Jays at Hammond Park on Thursday.

Compiling a perfect 6-0 conference record, Minot captures a WDA West Region regular season championship, as well as the top seed heading into regional tournament play next week.

In the No. 1 singles match, Minot’s Zach Diehl made quick work of Gage Orr, winning 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2, Aidan Diehl was tested against Mason Lunzman, but came out on top after three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. In the No. 3 singles match, it was Grayson Schaeffer with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Max Fronk.

Hunter Rice continued Minot’s success in the No. 4 position with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Kane Schmidt. At No. 5, Colby Opp coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Adam Sortland. Brayden McLean also got the better of Camron Anderson in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles match.

Then in doubles, Zach Diehl and Opp earned a 7-5, 1-6, 11-9 win for the Magi in the No. 1 contest between Orr and Lunzman. In the No. 2 game, Aidan Diehl and Schaeffer were 6-0, 6-3 winners over Fronk and Anderson. Rounding out doubles play, Rice and Sam Griffith came away with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Schmidt and Kai Backen.

Afterward, Minot tennis coach Scott DeLorme said he thought the win over Jamestown featured the best start to a match his club has had all season long.

“We started out with three perfect singles matches of 6-0 set scores. I believe this team is starting to play some of our best tennis of the year and know we still have another level we can reach,” DeLorme told The Minot Daily News. “Early in the year, we were getting consistent wins, but always seemed to be a different combination of guys. The last few matches it’s been team efforts all the way down the lineup. Depth and consistency are going to be huge as we go into tournament play next weekend.”

The three-day WDA West Region Tournament will begin on Thursday, Sept. 30 at Hammond Park. Minot’s first tournament match will be at 1 p.m. that day against either Bismarck Century or Mandan.
