Minot tennis wins round-robin at home

After Friday's meet was called off due to poor weather conditions, the Minot boys tennis team wrapped up its first competition of the year with a win in Saturday's round-robin tournament at Hammond Park.
With every team in the West Region of the Western Dakota Association present for the meet, Minot's 22 points beat out second-place Bismarck Legacy by two. Meanwhile, Century (19), Mandan (13), Bismarck and Jamestown (11) and Williston (8) rounded out the rest of the field.
Collectively, Minot recorded one win at the No. 1 singles position, three wins in the No. 1 doubles spot, six wins apiece in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions, as well as six wins in the No. 2 doubles slot. As a result, the Magicians recorded wins in three of the five varsity divisions.
Minot's Hunter Rice and Colby Opp each went 6-0 in their respective singles divisions, Brayden McLean and Josh Hegstad teamed up to go 6-0 in No. 2 doubles play for the Magi. At No. 1 doubles, freshman duo Grayson Schaefer and Aidan Diehl went 3-3. Meanwhile, Zach Diehl withdrew from No. 1 singles competition due to a sore elbow.
Afterwards, MHS head tennis coach Scott DeLorme noted how pleased he was with the overall performance of his lineup at both the varsity and junior varsity levels.
"We feel very good about the depth of our team, and I think that showed today winning five total divisions between the varsity and junior varsity," DeLorme tells The Minot Daily News. "That will be a big asset for us going forward, but more importantly, we were able to see different items that we know we need to improve on in the short term. Playing against other competition this weekend was a much-needed item for us and it will give us a chance to get back to work Monday at practice and try to fine tune various things."
Next up on the schedule, the Magicians plan to host Legacy on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup that will feature a 4-3 format. Start time for that meet is slated for 4:15 p.m. at Hammond.
