Dogs demolish Horseheads at home 23-2

Robert Brewer/MDN Souris Valley cleanup hitter Taylor Justus signals to the sky as he crosses the plate following his three-run home run in the second inning of Tuesday night's game at Corbett Field.

After a day off on Monday, the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs (42-18, 20-9) began a three-game home stand Tuesday night against the Casper Horseheads at Corbett Field. It is safe to safe the home team’s offense was busy early and often.

Souris Valley got its assault started in the first inning. With two men in scoring position and nobody out, Steven Moretto put the ball in the air to center for the sacrifice fly. In the very next at bat, cleanup hitter Taylor Justus mirrored what Moretto did and recorded a sac fly to center of his own.

In the second, the Sabre Dogs put the pedal to the metal and rallied for seven big runs. An RBI groundout by Gunnar Magrann tacked on the first run of the rally. Three batters later, Allen Grier’s two-out single drove in Jared Breedwell to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Dogs.

The two out rally continued with a run producing base hit from Moretto as Souris Valley jumped out to a 5-0 advantage. In the next at-bat, it was Justus who took a 1-2 pitch out of the yard for a three-run home run. Not to be outdone, Jordan Williams recorded a solo homer right after Justus to conclude the scoring in Souris Valley’s monster inning.

Three more runs crossed the plate in the third for the Sabre Dogs as they enjoyed a massive 12-0 lead at that point. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Eric Wallington was equally as dominant on the mound for the Dogs as he tossed six scoreless innings while racking up 12 strikeouts and allowing just one hit. The Sabre Dogs held an enormous 17-1 lead heading into the seventh inning stretch and went on to win by a final score of 23-2. Wallington picked up the decision victory as the Dogs offense amassed 18 hits compared to five for the Horseheads.

Up next on the schedule, Souris Valley plans to meet Casper for the second game of the series at Corbett on Wednesday evening. Start time for that game is slated for 7:05 p.m.
